Handy With Wiring? 1962 Studebaker GT Hawk

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Gran Turismo (GT) Hawk was the last iteration of the Hawk Series of Studebaker automobiles that began in 1956. It was the most luxurious edition and was one of the least-produced of the Hawks over a 2.5-year production run that ended when Studebaker shifted assembly operations to Canada. This first-year GT Hawk looks nice at first glance, but needs some interior and electrical work, with the latter including a new wiring harness. Calling Dr. Volt!

Studebaker gave the Hawks a facelift in 1962, treating the roofline to a formal look like the Ford Thunderbird and a hood/grille resembling a Mercedes-Benz. Two-thirds of the less than 12,000 GT Hawks built were titled as 1962 models, so they’re the most plentiful today out of a fairly rare lot overall. The standard engine was Studebaker’s 289 cubic inch V8 which you could get with a supercharger (that the seller’s car does not have). This one also has a column-shifted automatic transmission (Borg-Warner?)

We’re told this Stude is not a show car, but it should stand proud when it comes to the body and most of the paint. The interior is okay, with the seats fine, but the door panels and carpeting will need some attention. The vehicle has a reported 72,000 miles which is likely given what we see. We’re told the car has electrical problems which is why there is a new wiring harness in the trunk (along with a new dash pad if you want to install it). Wiring gremlins are hard to track down, so you’ll need to find someone who knows how to deal with these issues.

There is some documentation to go with the running project, such as the owner’s manual and a list of where you can still buy parts for these products out of South Bend, Indiana. If the wiring harness doesn’t drive you crazy, the rest of the work needed should get you to a weekend cruiser for Cars & Coffee. Located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, this Stude is available here on craigslist for $7,900 OBO. Another fine tip from Rocco B.!

Supercharger not a option in 62. I would recommend joining Studebaker Drivers’ Club if you but it. Great resource for info and all the parts you woud need.

My father owned a 62 Hawk in the late 60’s early 70’s it had the factory super charger. I have also seen other 62’s with a factory supercharger.

u into restorations? I have a 1970 Volvo powered Marcos GT that is diss assembled and ready for a complete restoration I would provide a new interior and have the steel frame sand blasted and painted to anyone who would like to have a real collectors, British sports car. .I am looking for a trade.
I have gotten too old to do another Marcos.
Type; ‘ Larry Meadows and Marcos’ in the browser to see some of the Marcos cars that I have restored.

Looks like a steal if your looking for one – not sure about that wiring but maybe had a mouse issue under the hood…..clean car though.

Quite agree. If your back can handle time under the dash to do rewiring, this could turn out a very nice prize. Keep a couple old pillows to lay on. Much more comfy. Wish I had another space in the garage.

I owned a 1953 14G Lowey coupe from 1963 until it was destroyed in a barn break in in 1990 by a bunch of neighborhood thieves along with a 1929 Briggs body four door Ford and a 1956 Bel Aire Chevy four door Sport sedan.
I belonged to the STUDEBAKER DRIVERS CLUB all those years.
