Hemi/4-Speed: 1966 Plymouth Satellite

The 1960s was a great time to be a performance car enthusiast. If buyers had a thick enough wallet, they could walk into a dealership and drive away in a car capable of pinning them back in the seat whenever they pressed the “loud” pedal. Such is the case with this 1966 Plymouth Satellite. Not only does it present superbly, but its drivetrain is positively mouthwatering. It has come off the back of a recent restoration, and it is hard to find fault with this rust-free classic. It needs a new home, so the owner has listed it for sale here on eBay. Located in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, the owner has set a BIN of $117,000, although there is the option to make an offer.

If you are considering tackling a restoration, there’s no better place to start than with a rust-free classic with no history of accident damage. That is the case with this Satellite. Its steel is said to be 100% original, and not only are the panels remarkably clean, but the underside is spotless. The panels are cloaked in Code B Black paint that shines magnificently. The seller classes it as a 9.5/10 because he states that perfection is only achievable if the car is entirely original and unrestored. I think that he may be treating it harshly because there is no evidence of scratches or other issues. The panels are as straight as an arrow, while the sparkling trim and chrome offer the perfect contrast to the sea of black. The original owner ordered the Satellite with tinted glass, and this continues the flawless theme. The wheels aren’t original, but not only do they stay with this classic, but the seller includes the factory steelies in the sale.

It is hard to go wrong with a black-on-black color scheme, which we find with this Satellite. The interior is trimmed in Black vinyl, and once again, it appears perfect. There is no evidence of wear or physical damage. This is no surprise considering the car has clocked less than 1,000 miles since the restoration was finished. Apart from a column-mounted tach and a single switch and gauge mounted below the dash, there are no aftermarket additions. The original owner ordered the car with bucket seats, a console, and an AM radio. These remain intact, and everything works as it should. I can’t help but think that slipping behind the wheel of this Plymouth would feel exactly like stepping back to 1966.

We now reach the business end of proceedings with this Satellite. Even in its most basic form, the 1966 model offered respectable performance. However, buyers could ramp that up considerably if they had enough money in their wallets. It seems that the original owner was not short of greenbacks because, in addition to the sticker price of $2,695 for this Satellite, he handed over a not inconsiderable $907.60 for the 426ci Hemi option. That wasn’t the end of the story because there’s no point having 425hp at your disposal if you can’t apply it to the road. Therefore, he also selected a four-speed manual transmission and a Dana 60 Sure Grip rear end. Its ¼-mile ET of 13.6 seconds looks good today, but it must have made the owner the “king of the kids” in 1966. This Plymouth is a numbers-matching classic, but the owner treated the drivetrain to a complete rebuild as part of the restoration process. The engine was bored 0.020″ and features new pistons, a Competition Cam, and the remaining components have been refreshed. That means it should easily produce 425hp, although that figure could be higher. The cost and effort have been worth it because the owner states that it runs and drives perfectly. It has a genuine 56,000 miles on the clock, and judging by the included paperwork, I suspect that this claim is verifiable. The buyer will receive the original Window Sticker, Dealer Invoice, and documentation verifying this classic’s authenticity.

Some classic cars can represent a triumph of style over substance, while others can hide their performance light under a bushel. This 1966 Plymouth Satellite features neither of those traits. This car makes a bold visual statement, and it possesses the muscle to back its stunning looks. Any classic with a six-figure value will hardly be classed as cheap, but some justify their price tag because of what they offer. That is the case with this Satellite, and I won’t be surprised if one of the fifty-six people watching the listing hits the button pretty soon. Will you?

Dang…..need to go buy a lotto ticket…..if numbers all match this is kinda a steal for a first year produced street Hemi car.

The ’65 Satellite could be had with a 426 Hemi as well.

No Terrry – the 1965 street cars only got the 426 Wedge motor but yes you could order a A990 race car with a Hemi – they were post cars and not hardtops.

Adam, why would you do a restoration on a car that just had one 1,000 miles before?

You need to re read the article, it’s says 1000 miles since restoration ,not a restoration of a car with only 1000 miles on it
I think it is a fair price for such a rare classic

And you need to re-read my comment. I said that this car had a restoration and has put only 1,000 miles on it since completion. I did not say it had only 1,000 miles on it.

    Ummm,
    Perhaps because it’s a 56-year-old vehicle?

A 56 year old vehicle which has put only 1,000 miles on it since its last restoration. Just how frequently do restorations need to be made?

A beauty and not a rotted out 68 Charger. I drove a 66 Hemi Satellite 4 speed while an editor at Hemmings Motor News. What a thrill.

Had a 66 Hemi Satellite like this one with the auto. One quick car for a high school kid in 67. After my insurance was canceled……bought a 63 Grand Prix and paid cash.
