Besides the Pontiac GTO (1964), the Plymouth Road Runner (1968) was perhaps the biggest hit of the muscle car era. Based on the B-body Belvedere, the Road Runner began as a budget muscle machine compared to the upscale GTX model (a Satellite derivative). The seller’s 1969 edition has the high-performance version of the 383 cubic-inch V8 with a 4-speed manual transmission. It runs and is numbers-matching, but it will need some time in the body shop. Located in Lakeside, California, this aging Mopar is available here on eBay. The current bid is $15,000; there is a reserve to be met, or you can pass-go and take it home for $21,000.
The HiPo version of the 383 Magnum V8 produced an additional five horsepower over the “regular” 383 (335 horses vs. 330). Plymouth built a record 82,000 copies of the Road Runner in 1969, and the majority of them had one or the other under the hood. Optional upgrades included a 440 V8 and the Hemi. The VIN provided by the seller confirms this, and the seller says the duo has numbers that match.
We wish some history on this Plymouth was provided, but it is what it is. The color of this car may have once been Banana Yellow (a variant of bronze), but it’s all worn out and doesn’t match, suggesting maybe the door or something has been replaced and repainted. The odometer reading is 85,000 and – if this Mopar has been dormant for a while – could be legit and not a rollover.
Rust is plentiful but may not be critical except around the rear window glass. Its presence there makes you wonder about the trunk or area behind the rear seat. According to the seller, this Road Runner runs and drives but doesn’t say how well. Chances are, a lot will be needed to make it a daily driver, at a minimum.
