Hot Rod Project? 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air

To many, the 1957 Chevrolets were the most attractive of the Tri-Five series (1955 to 1957). They gained tailfins that year but were tastefully done and not over the top like the winged wonders over at Chrysler. The Bel Air Sport Coupe was one of the best-selling models, including the ’57 available here on craigslist. It’s in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and runs with a 350 cubic inch V8, but we’re told little else. The asking price is $22,500. Kudos for the tip, Mitchell G.

So, how popular was the Bel Air Sport Coupe? Well, more than 168,000 copies left the factory with either a 235 inline-6 or one of two V8s, the 265 the new 283. We don’t know which was in the seller’s car to begin with, but a 350 is there now which means the engine is more than a decade newer than the rest of the car. The transmission is a manual but we don’t know if it’s three or 4-speed.

The seller uses the word “speed” in the listing, so we don’t know if that refers to the tranny or how fast the car is capable of going. While the Chevy is said to run, we don’t know how well, and – given the amount of dust and grime – we suspect that it’s been sitting for a good while. The front bumper is missing, and no mention is made of it, so perhaps this Bel Air was on its way to becoming a Gasser.

From the few photos provided (no interior or engine compartment), the body looks good, and the paint might respond to a good waxing after a thorough bath. But that’s just a guess. The driver’s side window appears to have been busted out as there is cellophane where glass normally would be. This could be a great project car if the seller had provided a few more details for the asking price.

Good looking! This project should make the new owner grin like the Grinch.

Would take cleaning up and more pictures to get me on the buyer’s list. Never did get excited about buying a really dirty car. Even the car we are building now found in a Virginia back yard sitting for 25 years under a tarp when we bought it was cleaned inside and out by the seller.

Cool hot rod. Looks like its seen some action. If only they could talk, probably has some stories. Not breaking the law, but definitely walking the line. Lol! Yeah, the only people who carry in CA are criminals who don’t care about laws. I used to work in San Francisco and Oakland. Not any more. So sad whats happened. Last time I went to Sunnyvale to work, I’m an electrician, I went to dinner at a nice restaurant. When I went out to leave, the parking lot was full of cop cars. Glass everywhere. Sure enough my truck and about a half a dozen other cars were hit by a gang of thrives who broke everyone’s windows and just grabbed everything they could. Of course they got away and no witnesses. Never heard anything again. They got a $15,000 cable tester and some other tools and equipment. I don’t go back there again. Can’t go to any Giants games either. Not supposed to talk politics on here either. Can’t talk about it- thats everyone’s solution to the problems we are facing in CA. Most good people left CA. Still, a few of us rock on because we are so spoiled with the weather. Trying not to buy an EV! Lol! Hard to find anybody to work on old schools and I’m getting older myself. They call me a boomer II. Lost in the cracks.. Shout out to all the old Classics!

What a way to sell a car at such a high price. Sure it will sell there’s one born every minute.

I’m from New Jersey and I agree 100% and now I have the right to carry concealed in all 50 states or so I’m told

No kidding. I live about 10 miles south of Oakland, luckily their residents tend to cross the bridge in to SF or go east to Walnut Creek to do their “shopping”.

This is for Wayne … maybe 49 states, not Cali … here we have to pay $300-500 for carry licence ($5 more if you want it laminated!) – and that’s only in counties where the sheriff agrees with a carry license … many do not … CA does NOT recognize other states’ carry license … even the AZ license I have is not recognized though it is in most states … new applicants here have to have 16 hrs of class while re-ups “only” need 8 hrs, up from 4 hrs a couple years ago – the Dems are making it harder all the time … as the CW song says, California is a brand new game – and a game that’s hard to play …

No, smart enough not to buy it. There are too many other interesting cars to waste my time on this one.

These were the most desireable of the 50’s csrs, just a beautiful design to behold in person! Timeless classic deserves to return to the street and car show culture for all to behold.

“Gasserish” kinda sorta. It’s probably a later build more than an early build. If seller left the 3 or 4 off of “Speed” in the ad title I’d lean towards “3”. Guessing the driver’s window regulator is toast or stuck down or both – regardless it’s a pretty cool ride with potential but the lack of pics leaves me less than interested. That and the fact that it’s on the other side of the country in the land of salt leave this whole mess in the copy some pics and scroll on category. The lack of info in the ad is either a car with many issues or lazy seller or both – or – are they actually being pretty savvy?
Someone will buy it but rolling into Philly with a sack full o’ cash could be something that I’d love to see filmed – Yo Adrian – we’re gonna take a road trip…..Best of luck to the buyer. :-)

Whenever I come across a car presented like this I know the guy’s just trolling the waters hoping to hook a sucker.

This looks like the one my brother had in north NJ in the 70’s black with gold bel air inset his had the front bumper off and the black crager ss all around like this one has on the back. My brother’s had black roll and pleat interior solid lifter 327 with a 4 speed stick hurst shifter it was originally a 283 auto. Had the front end lifted and midnight confessions lettering on the front fenders I loved that car and if this was about 5-6k cheaper I would be driving from SC to philly

I remember that car because I liked the song! I saw it in the late 70’s at a car show. I’ll bet it’s still around!

You could offer the Person 5-6k less. The worst thing they could say is No. Because they have the car priced kind of high.

Replaced 57 210 hood with chrome V and a 1956 Trunk lid with 56 Chevy BowTie badge and chrome V. Car is a Mess missing front bumper Rocker molding missing and Gold fender Louvers missing. Drivers door window missing and is the original Engine and prolly trans too. somebody put mags and big tires on it and removed the front bumper and tried to make a Ricky Racer out of it. it all can be Fixed but it’s gonna set you back $50,000 to do the job right.

Probably a 6 cylinder if the rear badging over the v is correct. V8s had Chevrolet script above the V.

Yes, when you can buy a nice complete car, full interior, and or full, drivetrain, full chrome all trim, all bumpers front, and or back bumpers, as new torkthurst, mag’s,and or white letter tires, at Mecum, and or Barrett Jackson, this is most definitely kinda high for the money.

To mouth john. There’s always a smart ass. If anyone’s from a ghetto it’s you. Just because you live in a trailer don’t be mad at others. You shouldn’t have depended on welfare.
