Movies often help great demand for production automobiles. Examples include the Dodge Charger in the Steve McQueen flick, Bullitt, and another is the Pontiac Trans Am from Burt Reynolds’ Smokey and the Bandit. But how about the 1969 Dodge Charger from Kurt Russell’s Death Proof? It was not the blockbuster that the other two movies were. The seller says this is the car that ole Kurt drove, but it’s been dormant for years without an engine or transmission. Located in Hesperia-Victorville, California, the Dodge is available here on eBay for $51,050, although offers will be considered.
The 1969 Dodge Charger may be better known for its many appearances in the TV Series, The Dukes of Hazzard. More than 300 of them were said to have given their all in the production of the show and the subsequent motion picture. Perhaps that’s why Quentin Tarantino chose to have Kurt Russell drive one in the 2007 feature Death Proof. In that movie, Kurt is a stuntman who becomes a serial killer by taking out his victims with modified cars that seem to be “death proof” to him as the driver. Besides the ’69 Charger that Russell piloted, a 1971 Challenger that looked like the one from Vanishing Point was also a “star” in the production.
We’re told the seller bought this car and others from the movie after it was made but before the picture was released in the theaters. So, they’ve been sitting around since 2007. He/she bought the Charger without a title but does have the original bill of sale from the movie company. There is no engine or transmission, but the seller has a good running 440 cubic inch V8 from 1968 that can be had for $4,400 extra. The same is said for an automatic transmission and another Mopar big-block.
The seller says the sheet metal is in good shape for the age but there is some rust in the trunk. While the car wears either faded dark green paint or grey primer now, the original color may be white or light yellow. The seller is open to answering questions and provides a phone number, but it’s an international exchange, so it’s not likely the seller and the car are in the same place. This discussion begs the question is a beat-up old movie car with no drivetrain potentially worth more than another roller in the same condition?

Truly Amazing what people want for Crap nowadays. Glad I have a decent Stash of Projects to work on in my Retirement Stage. Had a 68 440/Auto Charger, it was a Hoot, my 62 SS 327 Impala would run right with it, good times. Mostly have Chevy’s now. Charger would Really Do Some Great JUMPS Though!!!

No wiring no engine no transmission no steering wheel.. and look at all those metal beams you’d have to remove. There are known to be Tweakers in the Victorville/ Hesperia area, think he might be one of them asking that price. Insane
It’s also missing the duck hood ornament which is a deal breaker for me! Seriously, you could probably invest about 50k and break even on the sale or loose about the same amount you usually do after restoring one.

If I had an original movie car driven by a movie star, I wouldn’t pull the drivetrain out of it but rather, I’d keep it original (to the time of the filming).
Deathproof was ok… kind of a Grindhouse tribute thing I believe. It was a Tarantino project if that tells you anything.
It was a double-feature homage to grindhouse films with Robert Rodriguez’ Planet Terror, which was far more fun with a lot less talking.
If this was actually in the film, it was probably a B-roll car or a stand-in that never ran. Also could have been set-up for stunt work to be destroyed but never used. Not sure what the framing inside is form but IIRC it was not how Russell’s character had set-up the car to make it ‘death-proof.’

Deathproof is one of my all-time favorite movies. Some would say it couldn’t decide if it wanted to be a chick flick or not. I don’t care.
Some of the best car stunts you will ever see are in this movie, no CGI crap, and the baddest Nova ever. Thats the Nova I would build.
One more thing, great soundtrack featuring this scene “Down in Mexico” with Vanessa Ferlito. Unforgettable.

If I remember correctly the white 1970 Challenger from the Death Proof movie sold on eBay for just $11,000. I was surprised for such a low price but it was beat up and modified but I would’ve driven it like that. It had the mocked up window frames that was used for either stunts or camera work.
I’ve seen the movie “Death Proof”, just didn’t know the title. It was ok. Nothing to write home about. In fact, it was just on the other night on one of those obscure channels like “Comet”

Those other cars are iconic and so are the movies. Most people that see a 68 highland green Mustang or the Bandit’s Trans Am know what they are. Who’s going to be like, “wow, it’s Kurt Russell’s Death Proof car!!!” Why would I want a serial killer’s car, dreamed up from Tarantino’s twisted mind, regardless of price? I had a movie car once. It was a 1972 Oldsmobile 98 luxury 4 Dr hardtop in Midnight blue med blue vinyl top and interior I acquired sometime in the early 2000s. Supposidy, AL Puchino sat his a$$ in the passenger seat as he was driven around in the movie, “Carlitos Way.”
It was only in one scene and guess what? It got edited out. No proof whatsoever, except what the dealer told me, who was a good friend and I know he leased out cars to movie companies.
