Last Year Built: 1974 Plymouth ‘Cuda

Plymouth entered the 1970s with an all-new Barracuda that shared its E-body platform with the Dodge Challenger. Buyers responded favorably and sales increased by 50%. However, by 1974, production was down to a trickle by comparison and Chrysler discontinued both its pony cars for 1975. This ’74 ‘Cuda, once the performance version of the Barracuda, needs some cosmetic work but the drivetrain has been rebuilt. Found in Reseda, California, this Plymouth is available here on craigslist for $22,500.

In 1970-71, you could get about any Chrysler powerplant in a Plymouth ‘Cuda, including the potent 426 Hemi. But that changed starting in 1972 as the cars became more show than go due to pressures from the insurance industry and tightening Federal emissions controls. By 1974, when fewer than 4,000 ‘Cudas were built, you could get one with a 318 cubic inch V8 and a 2-barrel carburetor, the same kind of motor you could get in grandma’s grocery getter. For 1974, 2,412 ‘Cudas came that way with an automatic transmission, like the seller’s car.

The seller and the car’s VIN seem to agree that this is a ’74 ‘Cuda. The car appears finished in Lime Light paint, one of Chrysler’s Hi-Impact colors, though sources suggest those were phased out after the 1973 model year. Only three photos are provided, so determining if another color is on the car anywhere isn’t possible. At less than 75,000 miles, this Plymouth is said to have had a rebuild of its 150 hp motor and tranny, and the car came with bucket seats and air conditioning. Though the paint looks okay, we’re told the car has rust that needs repairing in the trunk, rear quarter panels, and front floor pans. Without seeing the car in person and given the work needed, the lack of a hot powerplant suggests a lower cost of acquisition may be needed to make the project viable.

Lousy ad for a cuda and the price is a joke. Do people think they can sell a car doing this? With the current prices for 74s this price would put you upside down in no time. Definitely time for a reality check with these people selling cars over 10 yrs old. Get real people quit spending foolish money on these cars.

Unfortunately, there are those who will pay the price to get a “real 74 ‘Cuda ” I have seen nothing but a VIN# and a frame & fender tag that matches the frame sell for close to the $$ asked for this car ~ I am not one for re-bodying any car as it seems to me that would make it very easy to hide a stolen car there, that’s just my opinion , I would pay more like $8-10 K for max for a 74 not much more

There is no way to judge this car based on the limited photos. The seller also has several other cars priced and presented the same way.

Granted, they have L.A. prices on them, but I can’t see a single one selling without more effort put in.
