Luxury Model: 1970 Plymouth Barracuda Gran Coupe

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

When the third generation of the Plymouth Barracuda was introduced in 1970, it was an all-new model that bore little resemblance to its predecessor.  The car now rode on a revised version of Chrysler’s B-Body, called the E-Body, and although the platform was shorter there was still plenty of room up front to house whatever engine the buyer chose to power his new Barracuda.  While many enthusiasts remember the third-generation E-Bodies as high-performance muscle cars, an often forgotten variant is the Gran Coupe, which gave the buyer a higher and more luxurious trim level but could also be equipped with a good choice of engines, ranging from a 225 cubic inch Slant 6 all the way up to a 383.  The Gran Coupe being offered here is an in-between offering, sporting a 318 cubic inch V8 with a few modifications.  If you’ve been in the market for a well-maintained E-Body, this 1970 Plymouth Barracuda Gran Coupe would definitely be worth a look.  Located in Murrieta, California, it can be found here on eBay with a current bid of $45,100.

The current owner has had this Barracuda Gran Coupe since 2004, at which time he purchased it from the original owner who bought the car new in Almeda, California.  He describes the car as an original, numbers matching unrestored example that has had some updates to the drivetrain.  The Gran Coupe has always been garage kept and still retains most of its original High Impact Vitamin C orange paint, with the upper areas of the front fenders showing some paintwork.  The car is said to have 50 years worth of minor dings and scratches but is in overall nice condition.  A set of American Racing wheels and BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires take care of the rolling duties.

Things inside are looking nicely preserved as well, and to be unrestored it’s one of the better-looking interiors I’ve seen on an E-Body in a while.  The factory radio is still intact, and the dash and seats are looking considerably better than one would expect to be original.  In addition to the floor console, the Gran Coupe is also equipped with that way cool overhead center console.

The 318 has had a few tasteful modifications made to it, including a Competition Cam, MSD distributor, Edelbrock carburetor, Hooker Headers with Flowmaster dual exhaust plus a few other goodies.  The car also comes with its original keys, owner’s manual, window sticker, and lots of service records dating all the way back to 1971. What are your thoughts on this 1970 Plymouth Barracuda Gran Coupe?

You would NEVER see a “luxury” version of a car now in a bright orange color. Too bad, it gives the car personality!

Funny he didn’t show the overhead console – kinda what makes it a grand….or more grand is what he’s asking……wonder what he paid the original owner ?

Weird. There is a picture of the overhead console if you scroll down in the ad, but not in the pictures at the top of the ad.

Hard to believe those are the original leather front bucket seats w/no visible creasing as leather does, especially after 52 years!

Great car in original condition, ruined by those wheels and aftermarket engine dress up and reversible engine mods.
I hope the seller kept the original parts.

This is nice to see. My dad also has a ’70 GC in vitamin c with black vinyl top. His however has the more attractive (IMO) white interior. Something about the orange, black and white all together just looks good. Im more partial to the chrome mirrors in this color combo though. His was also the 318/904 combination. Unfortunately the 318 was replaced in the late 80’s with a smog 360 from 76 dodge monaco station wagon. My dad thought displacement was the replacement. Not in this case…. Yes we still have the 318 but a 340/727 will be going in. Wish i could convince him to do a three pedal conversion. Car already has an 8 3/4 with 3.91’s from wrecked cuda as he blew up the original in the 70’s. Yes i believe we still have it on a shelf too. Not a full blown cuda but still a neat car that hes owned since ’72. Its awaiting a much needed restoration which i hope we start this year. Has rust in all the usual Ebody places. Decklid has been replaced already but that leaves the decision of whether or not to put the luggage rack back on. It would be neat to have him drive it to shows again before its too late. Someone will enjoy this one and probably turn some heads.
