No Reserve Big-Block: 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible

It is an unfortunate reality that pristine and original C2 Corvettes are now beyond the reach of most average enthusiasts. Therefore, cars like this 1966 Convertible have become more important in the current classic market. It isn’t completely original, meaning its price isn’t likely to climb into the stratosphere. It presents exceptionally well, and its overall condition marks it as a desirable vehicle that should provide a new owner with immediate enjoyment courtesy of the big-block under the hood. It needs a new home, and you will find it listed here on eBay in Lambertville, Michigan. Bidding has raced to $44,400 in a No Reserve auction.

The seller indicates this Corvette has received some significant work but not whether that included a cosmetic refresh. I suspect it has undergone a color change because the existing paint shade doesn’t gel with anything on the 1966 Corvette color chart. I believe it is LeMans Blue, which first appeared on the color palette in 1969. The overall first impression is positive, with the exterior holding an impressive shine. There are no significant defects, with the same being true of the fiberglass. The sale includes a spotless hardtop, but there is no indication whether there is also a soft-top. The seller doesn’t mention any existing or previous rust issues with the frame or birdcage, and I believe the classic purchase process should include an in-person inspection. I’m not suggesting there are hidden issues with this ‘Vette, but when you’re dropping a significant sum on a car, it is better to play safe. The trim looks excellent, as does the glass. The Convertible rolls on a set of knock-off wheels, but I’m unsure whether they are factory items or reproductions.

The Corvette’s engine bay houses a 427ci V8, but it isn’t this car’s original big-block. I cannot read the air cleaner decals, and the seller doesn’t indicate whether it is the L36 version that delivers 390hp or whether the driver will have the 425hp under their right foot produced by the L72. My observations lead me to believe it is the L36, which sends its power to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. This Corvette would give little away to its more powerful sibling, storming the ¼-mile in 13.7 seconds before winding its way to 149mph. The seller reels off a long list of recent mechanical work, which should ensure this is a turnkey classic. They replaced the intake, carburetor, valve cover gaskets, fuel lines, suspension components, and exhaust. They don’t indicate how it runs or drives, but the news should be positive.

One of the disadvantages of owning a Convertible is that it becomes difficult to hide a sub-standard interior. That isn’t an issue with this Corvette because its interior presents extremely well for a driver-grade vehicle. The seller states they replaced many interior components, but it is unclear whether it included a complete retrim. The Blue leather seat covers have wrinkles associated with that material, but there are no splits or other problems. The remaining upholstered surfaces are spotless, as is the carpet. The gauge cluster was recently refurbished, and the unreliable factory clock disappeared in favor of a more accurate quartz unit. There is an AM/FM radio to provide entertainment on the move, and the overall impression is positive.

Although it is no longer 100% original, this 1966 Corvette Convertible is a car that promises a new owner a pleasurable classic motoring experience. Its presentation is hard to fault, and its potent V8 would make it exhilarating when the driver presses the “loud” pedal. Its desirability is demonstrated by the thirty-three bids submitted in less than two days, and there’s scope for that figure to increase before the auction ends. A new home is less than a week away for this gem, but could it be yours?

Only twice have I seen a car pop up from my town and this is one. Seen it a few shows. Decent car. If price doesn’t go crazy it’s worth it.

I’d install a luggage rack on it if it was mine.

Color looks a little brighter than Marina blue that was an option in 66 but also was Lyndale blue that was also available that looks like the interior colors, dash, instrument cluster, etc. Whatever a very nice car.

Tort, I had a ‘ 66 Coupe that was Nassau Blue that this car resembles color wise, I also had a ‘ 67 Coupe that was Lynndale Blue which I think was the only year that color was offered & a much more Grayer shade of Blue, but a very nice color. I wonder what color the folding top is or if it even has one ? I wouldn’t mind calling this drop top mine, it looks well sorted but of course an in person inspection should happen .

Looks to me like it is Nassau Blue. I had a ’66 coupe that color with white interior. Great combo.

I agree on your Nassau Blue comment. Paint code “FF” and 976. Most popular color in both 1965 and 1966. Over 6,000 cars each year. And it was a great color.

Motor looks to have the oval port.heads which is the 390 horse model.of the 427. Only 5,000 425s made and every body thinks they have one.of them…nice car..I like the color

The color sure makes it stand out!
    Very nice car, well equipped.
Would love to see it parked next to my C5, black convertible.
Then my only dilemma would be which one to take out for a spin.

Unless this intake was painted orange (the 425hp engines had aluminum intake manifolds), this is a 390hp.

Big block C2 Corvettes are very desirable. From description it would be terrific to own one like these. This kind of Corvette is the kind that will never grow old. They see simply look at classier and more desirable than the newer ” Euro style” Corvettes.

This listing was completely removed from EBay. I wonder if it was a scam?
