Numbers Matching N-Code: 1970 Ford Torino GT

Ford redesigned its mid-size Torino/Fairlane lineup in 1970 after just two years. The cars took on a more aerodynamic appearance, yet were not widely popular, so Ford reworked the cars yet again in 1972. This 1970 Torino GT Sportsroof (aka fastback) is 1 of 1,540 copies built with an N-code 429 cubic inch V8 and an automatic transmission (Marti Report-confirmed). Time and Mother Nature have been less than kind to this once hot car, so a total restoration will be needed. Located with dealer Mustang Masters in Jacksonville, Florida, this project is available here on eBay for $12,500.

We’re told this Medium Ivy Green Metallic Torino GT is stock and comes with the Thunder Jet version of the 429 V8. Since this was the most economical version of the engine, we also assume it had the least horsepower output of Ford’s 429 trio. That would have made it the most mannerly of the 429s offered in the muscle car era, which reached its peak in 1970/71. While the car used to go fast, stopping was more challenging because this auto has drum brakes on all four wheels.

Adding to the rarity of the rough rider is that you could get the N-code 429 with factory air conditioning, and I couldn’t imagine steering one of these machines without the power steering this one was ordered with. This is a bench seat interior GT, and it looks to be about as rough as the body. We’re told some work was started on the sheet metal, but the previous owner had to give up due to health problems. This includes some extra body panels to get rid of rust that doesn’t even exist.

We’re told the engine is complete and may be made to run since the V8 isn’t locked up. Apparently, the driveshaft has been removed, but it’s there somewhere to return to its perch. This Ford will come with a Marti Report for you to determine how many of these machines existed at one time, but surely not after 56 years. In a world full of Chevelle SS 396s and Pontiac GTOs, this is the alternative less often seen then and now.

Déjà vu – this was featured over a year ago. Not a criticism, but what’s odd – or not – the new auction had the same pictures and same price. Lazy or genius?

This car would, per the seller’s ad and the markings on the car, be better described as a Torino Cobra. The provided Marti Report is great to have.

As Big_Fun notes, we have seen this car before (and perhaps, other items from this seller). The seller is from Jacksonville FL and has a collection of old Ford iron and parts. For entertainment, look them up on Google Maps.
