Only Family Z28: 1978 Chevrolet Camaro

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The second-generation Camaro platform was aging by 1978, so Chevrolet gave the cars a facelift that resulted in a sales increase of 24%. And that’s in addition to the success that was happening over at Pontiac with the Trans Am (can you say Smokey and the Bandit?). This Z28 looks like a solid survivor which has spent most of its life with the same family. Located in North Colorado Springs. Colorado, this bright yellow pony car is available here on craigslist for $9,950. Thanks, Barn Finder “Steve”, for this hot tip!

Thanks to increasing federal safety regulations, all the bumpers on new cars grew in size in the early 1970s. The Camaro would be no exception. Beginning in 1978, all-new body-colored urethane front and rear fascia were added to the car, hiding the principal hardware underneath. Buyers liked the change in the looks of the Chevies, and it all paid off in the dealer showrooms. Output shot up to more than 272,000 units with nearly 55,000 of those being the snazzy Z28.

This Camaro was passed down to other family members beginning with the original owner. We’re told the VIN confirms this is a Z28, and a pop of the hood shows us that it’s powered by a 350 cubic inch V8 with automatic transmission. It’s a well-optioned vehicle including T-tops which had replaced the convertible by many manufacturers. The auto has all sorts of 1970s technology, including a factory 8-track player and maybe it will come with the Boston cartridge we see in the photos!

One of the family members gave the Camaro a new coat of correct yellow paint, but the clear coat is beginning to peel off and will have to be redone. There are no visible dents, but there are two places where rust is starting to creep in. A couple of $50 patches will be needed plus labor and that could be handled when the Chevy is resprayed. Considering the age of the machine, 83,000 miles doesn’t sound bad and this “muscle car” should have plenty of life left.

I had a ’79 Berlinetta with the 350. I always thought these were beautiful cars. On the Z28’s I loved these upgrade wheels. Very rare to see these wheels on a Z28 with the upgrade interior (same/similar to Berlinetta) rather than the vinyl seats. Since it was already sold I didn’t get to see which type of seats this one had.
