Picking Up Pieces: 1986 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The personal luxury Monte Carlo was one of Chevy’s most successful new car introductions. It was part of the company’s sales portfolio from 1970 through 2007, with a hiatus between 1989 and 1994. The fourth generation of 1981-88 Monte Carlo’s had the second-longest production run in the car’s history. This 1986 edition of the Super Sport Monte Carlo is partially disassembled and will have to be put back together. We don’t know if it was involved in any kind of accident, but we’re told the engine has been freshly rebuilt. Located in West Chicago, Illinois, this SS project is available here on craigslist for $4,900. This is another tip brought to us by T.J.!

If you wanted a rear-wheel-drive General Motors intermediate like the Monte Carlo, the 1988 model year would be the last outing. The cars got smaller and went to front-wheel-drive in 1989. So, the 1986 models would be close to the end of the line. Chevrolet built more than 119,000 MCs that year with more than one-third or 41,000 units being the SS like the seller’s auto. Not a lot of background is offered on this car, mainly why has it been taken partially apart? For example, if the motor needed to be addressed, why was the passenger side door removed?

Part of the front clip is off the car as well, but we’re told all the parts are there to make it whole once again. The seller says the motor has been rebuilt but is it the 305 cubic inch V8 that was typical of these cars? The valve covers are aftermarket, and they suggest some tinkering may have been done. The reported mileage is 50,000, so this car looks to have led a hard life for its time on the road. If you don’t mind finishing someone’s else handiwork, bring your trailer or flatbed.

Always liked the monte SS looks. Didn’t the Mexican 🇲🇽 GM hermanos get it done up right ? 350ci and stick shift model ?

I think it was a 305 with manual.

I have always loved these later model Monte Carlo SSs. I never understood why GM did not offer a manual transmission in these.

More pressing, why did these not get tuned port EFI ? That is the real downfall.

    2 questions…
Why would someone attempt to sell this with that pile of junk on it?
Why would Barn Finds post it?

A real ‘pig in a poke’ to be sure.
Seller not even trying to make this offering worthwhile to consider.
