While most people associate the Malibu model with the 1960s mid-size Chevelles, the 300 (and 300 Deluxe) were the bare-bones editions. The seller has a 2-door post coupe from 1967 that we’re told had a V8 from the factory rather than an inline-6. Today, this car has a Pontiac six-banger and needs some cosmetic work. Why the downward switch was made is unknown. Located in Wilton, Connecticut, this Bow-Tie project is available here on Facebook Marketplace for $8,000 OBO. An interesting tip brought to us by “Zen”.
The Chevelles were restyled in 1966, so the changes in 1967 were minor (mostly the grille and taillights). If you were one of the few to order a 300 2-door sedan with a V8 in 1967, you were one of just 1,900 buyers. The 300 Deluxe didn’t fare much better at 2,100 units. These were stark vehicles with little chrome trim and rubber floor mats (at least on the 300). Most buyers forked over the additional coin to get a Malibu instead.
We’re told this Chevelle had a 283 or 327 V8 when it left the factory, but it has a Pontiac 215 cubic inch inline-6 from 1963 or 1964. Why the change was made is not mentioned, but perhaps it was simply because the old motor was bad and this one was available. The car has an automatic transmission (Powerglide?) and the vehicle’s mileage is either 54,000 or 80,000, as the seller says both.
The Chevy starts, runs, and moves, but doesn’t stop very well. And some of the sheet metal is compromised, such as the trunk pan, floorboards, and rear wheel wells. The paint job is some version of green, and the upholstery is okay, though there is no headliner. The wheels are aftermarket, and the steering wheel looks like one from a 1970s Super Sport. The bottom line is this is a project car which might lend itself to a sleeper upgrade if the price is right.
