Post Coupe Roller: 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air

The 1955-57 “Tri-Five” Chevrolets are perhaps the most collected of all vintage automobiles. And it’s not because of rarity, as more than 4.5 million of them left the assembly line. Styling and available factory V8 power may be the leading factors, and some (including myself) find the 1957s the more attractive of the lot due to their tailfins. The seller has a 1957 post-coupe (aka 2-door sedan) that’s a little rusty and is a roller, so the options are many as to what you could do with it. Located in Eureka, Montana, this old-school Chevy is available here on eBay for $9,500 ($1,000 extra if you want an engine and transmission).

In the Bel Air series in 1957, the Sport Coupe was the most popular at 168,000 deliveries. Yet 63,000 buyers preferred a 2-door sedan with a post even though the level of trim was identical across all Bel Airs. This ’57 is one of those post coupes, and the VIN identifies it as having left the factory with a V8 engine, either 265 cubic inches or the new 283. A Powerglide automatic may have been part of the package, given the current pedal configuration.

The color combination on this post coupe is Larkspur Blue and Harbor Blue. But the paint is past the point of no return, and the driver’s side front fender has been replaced and primered. The rocker panels are rusty, and the front floor pans are going to need a couple of patches. The trunk looks good, with some surface rust to eradicate in the restoration process. The interior is mostly a goner and may come with some goofy-looking front buckets.

If you need an engine and tranny, the seller will install a 350 V8 with a Powerglide for shipping that he has on hand. That’s $1,000 extra, but your Chevy won’t be numbers matching whatever you decide to do. The odometer is approaching 10,000 miles, which likely means 110,000 (or even 210,000). The brakes aren’t any good either, so be careful when loading and unloading on a trailer. This Chevy sports 1970-ish Rally wheels, 15 inches in diameter.

Hard to see $9,500 worth of car sitting there. Don’t forget to ad transportation cost onto the purchase price.
