One of the most powerful cars built by Ford in 1969 was the Torino with the 428 Cobra Jet V8. According to the VIN, the seller’s car was one of those, but its best days are in the rearview mirror. This is a project at best, and more likely a parts car as the drivetrain is long gone. The Ford resides in a parking lot in Bryan, Ohio, and is available here on eBay where the bidding has reached $1,000. Someone will take it home.
The VIN defines this car as a 1969 Ford Torino Fastback (aka Sports Roof), assembled in Lorain, Ohio with a bench seat, and the R-Code 428 cubic inch V8 with Ram Air. It was also equipped with a 4-speed manual. That should make it one of the 11,099 Cobra Jet Torino’s built in 1969. It’s a shame that the engine and transmission are MIA because the car is now just a partially disassembled roller.
Those thinking there are parts be harvested here, the seller lists several which are still good. All the glass, the stagger shock mounts, the nine-inch rear end, inner door panels, and the dashboard are all said to be reusable. I haven’t priced replacement parts for these cars, but the seller says they’re either hard to find or expensive to acquire, so perhaps this is a good donor for another project.
Once restored, online price guides suggest these are $50,000 and up cars. But you’re going to have to invest a bundle in this one to get it there, needing another parts car to get the job done. The seller has one too many projects on hand, so this car and its pieces will need to go. Who’s up for a challenge?

These rusted up but good when driven in cold climates which used salt. Looks like this was one of them.

This is an R-code Ford Cobra, not a Torino. In 1969 the mid-sized Ford models were marketed as the inexpensive Fairlane, the nicely trimmed Torino, and the stripped-down high-performance Cobra. Just like the 1969 Plymouth Belvedere, Satellite, and Road Runner; separate and distinct models but all built off the body.
The Cobra name caused lots of confusion anyway (Shelby sold the name to Ford in 1968). The 1970 and 1971 models were marketed as Torino Cobras, though they don’t wear a Torino badge or emblem.
