In 1963, Plymouth was beginning to recover from the “Plucked Chicken” experiment of 1962 when the full-size cars were downsized to the new B-body platform. New sheet metal surrounded the 1963 Fury, and it appeared larger than before, which helped Plymouth double sales of the Fury over the ill-fated 1962s. The seller has the Sport Fury version from that comeback year, and it was running a year ago. Along with a few other vintage vehicles, this Mopar is available in Thompson Falls, Montana, and here on craigslist for $6,500.
The Sport Fury returned in 1962, supposedly to compete against the Chevy Impala and Ford Galaxie 500XL. Offered as a 2-door hardtop and convertible, the Sport Fury came with V8 power and a bucket seat interior. In the case of the seller’s car, a numbers-matching 318 cubic inch V8 is along for the ride with a push-button automatic transmission. We gather neither functions at the moment due to being left outside for the past 12 months. 11,483 and 3,836 Sport Furys were produced in 1963, split between coupes and drop-tops, respectively.
We’re told the body on this Sport Fury is straight, and the car only has minor rust after 63 years. The odometer reads 69,000 miles, but we don’t know if it’s on its first or second time around. We assume the original color was red, which would have looked sharp with a black interior. The seller describes the latter as being “there and could be saved.” So, this may be an all-original car that’s simply been forgotten by time.
If you want to turn this Plymouth into a muscle car, a spare 440 V8 comes with it (running?). Worst case is that you could sell that engine if it’s good and you don’t need or want it. These Sport Furys don’t turn up as nearly as often as an Impala SS of the same year, which outsold the Sport Fury by about 10 to 1. Thanks for the Mopar tip, “Curvette”!
