The AMX started out as a stand-alone, two-seater offering in the AMC lineup when it was introduced as a 1968 model, but by 1971 had become a more high-performance version of the second-generation Javelin. For those desiring some over-the-top styling, an interior by fashion designer Pierre Cardin became available as an option on the 1972-73 models, with this 1973 AMC Javelin AMX here on eBay sporting these cool colors inside. This one’s located in Racine, Wisconsin, with bidding up to $9,600 at the time of this writing.
For less than one hundred additional dollars, buyers could add the Pierre Cardin package and receive stripes that were all but guaranteed to result in questions every time a passenger stepped inside. With only a little over 4,000 Javelins with the PC option produced during the two years this interior was available, it’s kind of a rarity nowadays and scores lots of points on the fun-factor scale. The six-color material went from the seats, up the doors, and finally ended on the headliner. The inside condition here isn’t perfect, but still seems quite decent considering more than 50 years have now passed since this one was new.
A tobacco barn was home to this AMC for quite some time, with the seller providing us a couple of photos showing us the as-found appearance. Fortunately, the car seems pretty much complete, and though the body could use a good massage, the only exterior rust mentioned is a few areas in the quarters. The seller has you covered there, as he’s providing brand-new metal to cut and patch these sections. Interestingly, the only hint AMC gave outside that these cars had a special interior was the Cardin emblem on the front fenders.
The “P” in the VIN indicates this one came equipped with a 360 engine plus a 4-barrel, which the seller says is running great. A video provided shows the motor in action, which starts quickly, idles well and still sounds healthy. The mileage is listed at 88,000, and while it’s not confirmed that this is actual, this engine just may have some decent life left. There’s no information given about the transmission, other than it’s automatic.
Underneath, the platform is stated to be about 95% rust-free, with one small part of the rear floor being an exception. Standing water was the culprit here, but a piece to replace this area will be included in the sale. The seller believes this one will be an easy projector or can also be driven as it is now, but if the latter is chosen, I’d invest in a new set of tires on day one before getting behind the wheel. Even without the colorful interior, this seems like it would be a promising AMC to own, but with the cool fabric, I feel the desirability here goes up a couple of notches. What are your thoughts on this 1973 Pierre Cardin Javelin AMX?
AMC was on a roll. Pierre Cardin, Gucci, Levi’s and does anybody remember the Oleg Cassini? If only interior designers took such leaps today. So tired of black/grey/silver bland interiors. AMC cars will always live on in our memories where today’s cars are doomed to disappear from or memories in short order. So sad and especially sad for today’s youth, that they will never know what they missed.
While back I posed the question… Which one was Howard’s favorite ?
…a Càrdin or Levi’s special edition lol. 👔 👖
Really like these, had a ‘74 with a 4 speed, non PC.
Wonder if the soiled fabric would respond to a deep clean.
I was wondering about the Tobacco farm reference, especially since it’s in Wisconsin.
Didn’t see it mentioned in the eBay ad…
I miss AMC!
Quarter panels, floor pan, gas tank, total restoration needed. That $9k should be about it. Anything above that would be from someone with a lot of money to blow. Parts aren’t exactly found just anywhere for AMC products. GLWS.
To each his own of course, too much work needed and just not interesting enough.
Looks like a cool project! I’m kind of curious about that gremlin in the garage. Looks like it’s hopped up!
Auction mentions seating for 3 people – maybe an A.I. error, counting the rear seat as only 1 seat?
As a convertible only summer driver for decades , AMC has never been on my list as they had no convertibles with style , no amc or javelin’s anyway , so i have never owned one ,
3 eagles and 1 spirit for winter and work but always looked at them closely , the faggy interior does nothing positive for me , actually hate it and who it represents but to each his own
YOLO
these interiors were a light show on their own. i had a javelin with the PC option and never got tired of it. the car was totaled, i saved the seats. sold them off . 20 years later i bought a project amx with two interiors. turns out i got the exact same seats i sold back. they are now on my shelf waiting for the next amx that rolls along needing an interior. i guess im stuck in the 70’s…..
Would it have killed him to clean and polish this beauty so it looks its best?
