Restorable 4×4: 1963 International Scout

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Here is an early International Harvester Scout 80. The 4WD truck is red with a black interior. With 4 days remaining in the auction, the 1963 Scout 80 can be seen here on eBay. The vehicle is located in the dry climate of Spokane, Washington. The odometer indicates a reading of 56,746 miles and the truck is said to start right up and run well. The bidding is up to $3,455 and the reserve has not been met.

The interior of this 1963 Scout is primitive but functional. The truck even has an AM radio. The seats are the only upholstery on the interior and they look to be in good condition. The Scout is a compact vehicle with excellent off road capabilities. It has a tight turning radius and came in a soft and hard top configuration. The 1963 Scout 80 had a curb weight of 3,900 pounds. This Scout is fitted with aftermarket wheels which look good and give the vehicle a nice stance.

The 152 cubic inch inline four cylinder engine is mated to a factory 4 speed transmission. This engine was rated at 86 net horsepower and 93 gross horsepower by the manufacturer. The seller states that the transfer case is stuck in high gear and will need to be repaired. Many enthusiasts consider the International Harvester Scout to be the first real SUV. Ford Bronco fans of course disagree and the Scout has a loyal following and were produced from 1960 to 1979.

Patina abounds on the exterior but the body appears to be in pretty good shape.  One area that was rusted was repaired on the passenger side with a welding job that looks like I did it! The early Scout 80 was replaced with the Scout 800 in 1966 with improved engine options. Eventually, International introduced the Scout II in 1971 which sold through 1979 when production ended. This Scout could be driven as is or restored.

I had a 64′ International Scout, 4 cyl, 3 speed, 2 wd. Picked it up for $50.00 that looked Mint compared to this one. Had it for 8 years as a back-up, sold it for $150.

This is my Scout. Funny, I did a search for Scout pics and here it is. The bidding went to $8100 several days before the end of the auction, then the top bidder pulled out at the last minute and the second bidder had already bought something else. I started a new auction but ended up canceling and keeping it instead. It’s currently in my garage waiting for spring to start restoration.
