Rolling Racer: 1964 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu SS

The Chevelle debuted in 1964 as Chevrolet’s new mid-size car. The public responded enthusiastically, and more than 370,000 units were produced that first year, including the reborn El Camino pickup. The Super Sport would be a series of its own right out the gate as the Impala SS also gained that honor this year. The seller’s Chevelle looks like a real deal SS, but it’s largely a roller now after having spent most of its former life as a race car. Tucked away in Galway, New York, this rolling project is available here on eBay where you can buy it now for $4,495 or you can submit an offer. Another great tip comes our way from Larry D!

1964 cowl tag code 5837 signifies a Chevelle Super Sport with a V8 engine. 57,445 or 15% of all Chevelle production in ‘64 were these models. Some tell-tale signs that the seller’s car was once a racer is the special fuel tank in the trunk, a removable front-end clip, and rear-wheel wells that have been enlarged for larger tires. The Chevy is pretty much stripped down to just a body now. The engine and transmission are long gone along with most of the interior and all the glass and exterior trim except for the grille and rear bumper.

The photos provided show you exactly what you will get if you buy the car. No extras and no parts in boxes. And because the car was registered in New York before 1973, it would normally come with a transferrable registration. But that was lost long ago so a Bill of Sale will have to be satisfactory.

Beneath the faded red primer, there are traces of the car’s original color, Lagoon Aqua. The interior was done in Medium Aqua, a lighter shade compared to the exterior. Since this car is going to require almost everything, including rear quarter panels if you want it to look stock again, this will be an expensive and time-consuming project. Can you get back to a super nice running SS without breaking the bank?

The car is now unlisted on eBay. Perhaps the owner took the first offer and ran. $4k+ seemed out of sight

It’s been relisted by the seller for the same price as the original listing.

Race car? I doubt it. the only “race” item I see is a fuel cell. No evidence of a roll cage, the rear fender openings appear to be stock to me, the front end does not appear to be removable, the photo was likely taken before the car was pieced back together. It’s just a shell with old Centerline wheels and a fuel cell, with dreams of becoming a race car

Think Dave is correct–sold best offer excepted. I dont see 4995 worth in this shell. Anyhoo- good luck and happy motoring.
