Rumpus Room On Wheels: 1998 Mauck Limo

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Well, well, what do we have here? It’s a 1998 Mauck MSV limousine manufactured by Mauck Specialty Vehicles of Worthington, Ohio. The seller states that only 400 of these limo/recreational-style vehicles were assembled but other sources put the number considerably lower. Between 1996 and 1999, two different sizes were offered with some examples debuting as commercial buses though most went the limo/RV route. This rather peculiar-looking vehicle is located in Troy Grove, Illinois and is available here on craigslist for $16,995. Pat L. gets a nod and a wink for this most unusual discovery!

Sheaved in fiberglass panels, this limo has a rather ungainly appearance though it is equipped with what the seller refers to as “gullwing doors” but I think they operate more like scissors doors. I can’t tell whether it’s missing its grille or the opening is just designed to be very narrow. One thing for certain is that the clear coat is starting to take flight. Another observation is tires and wheels that seem overly undersized for such a blob of this size. I suppose they work adequately but they appear to be inadequate.

Not wanting to reinvent the wheel, a Mauck MSV sourced many, many parts from existing manufacturers. The body is positioned onto a GM P30 truck/motor home chassis and powered by a Chevrolet 454 CI big-block V8 engine tethered to an Allison automatic transmission. The seller states that this 75K mile limo, “runs great“. Also claimed is, “It has a new fuel pump exhaust manifolds, plugs cap rotor wires, new exhaust“.

The interior is where the action is and it looks like it could be quite the fun ride! The seller says that’s where he’s devoting his attention right now but it looks to be in pretty complete condition though he does note that the sound system/cabinet could use some attention. It is suggested that “This could be an RV, promotional vehicle, or leave it be a limo” but I imagine trying to convert this interior to something RV-centric would be a very expensive and complicated undertaking. Of note, there are additional parts included that appear to be a mix of exterior (the grille maybe) and interior items.

OK, so, it’s now what to do with it time. Most limos today seem to be based on extended-length passenger cars or SUVs, this thing’s size (twenty-five ft in length, eight feet wide and high) puts it in a different realm. We’ve already discussed the RV potential makeover though I suppose it would make a cool traveling band hauler. The rock & rollers could paint their name and logo on the side and break up the impenetrable void of its all-black exterior. Beyond that, I’m out of ideas, what would you suggest?

The interior actually looks ok. I think I would describe the Mauck as a GMC motorhomes ugly sister. The wiring cabinet is compliments of a disgruntled Jaguar line worker

There should be an ad site just for old limos. Call it “Bring A Blacklight”.

Is that a Vortec intake on the 454?? Something doesn’t seem right with that, as I thought 454’s were long discontinued before Vortec engines.?!?

I’ve heard of the Mauck Limo. I’ve never seen one up close and personal. I can see this being used as a city transit bus.

It is going to require someone with a vivid imagination to figure out what to do with this one. Truly a unique vehicle!

Back in 1986 I sold cars with Andy Mauck at local Porsche Audi dealership in Dublin, Ohio. He talked about getting funding to build a bus all time. I thought he was nuts, but great guy.

Your local Maaco won’t have a paint boot big enough for this.

After sorting the mechanical and electrical/electronic needs, the exterior will really have to be redone too. No one will want to be seen getting in or out of it (Read: no Rentals)

My biggest regret in life is not buying one of these in mint condition for 3,000 bucks. Caught my eye in Lehigh acres Florida, spoke to the owner, saw the inside this thing was brand new. 1999 the last ese they made them. Fell in love with it, when I got the money together I came to find out it had sold. Person that bought it posted it on Facebook marketplace a week later and I’m guessing for what he was asking for. 40K
