Running Project: 1963 Studebaker Cruiser

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Studebaker was largely known for building and selling “sensible” automobiles in the 1950s and 1960s, though a few shining stars appeared throughout. Like the 1962-64 Gran Turismo and the 1963-64 Avanti. The Lark debuted in 1959 as a compact and provided Studebaker with a shot in the arm – but briefly. The 1963 to 1966 Cruiser essentially was an upscale Lark that came with a higher level of trim and a V8 engine. Located in Overland Park, Kansas, this example is a runner that needs cosmetic attention. It’s available here on craigslist for $5,000. A nod goes to Zappenduster for this Stude tip!

The Lark and its variants received a styling refresh in 1963 and looked more modern with thinner door and roof pillars and the absence of a wraparound windshield (all dating to the 1950s). The Cruiser came along that year and was promoted as “America’s First and Only Limousette” because it was a smaller car with a lot of features. A 259 cubic inch V8 was standard (289 optional) and front disc brakes, like those on the Avanti, could be ordered.

The seller’s Cruiser’s engine and brakes were “professionally reworked” about eight years ago, but we don’t know if that’s another way of saying rebuilt. The “Lark” has an automatic transmission and air conditioning (which may or may not work). The tires are new, but they rub on the front fenders on tight turns because they don’t match size-wise with the brakes (?).

We’re told that the Studebaker has 23,000 original miles, but the condition of the automobile suggests otherwise. The body is okay (a bit of rust and a small dent), the paint is weak, and the interior needs a complete refreshment. The trunk is full of all sorts of spare parts. If looks aren’t important, this could be one of those “fix it while you drive it” types of projects. Besides, how many of these Studebakers could be left nearly 60 years after the company’s demise?

It’s really sad to see a car in this condition. But my Dad bought a 59 Lark (base) in November of 59 as a drive to work car. It was a total lemon 🍋. The dealer could never figure out how to keep it reliable. A trip to Factory in South Bend provided no answers. The Lark was soon replaced by a 60 Valiant. RIP, Studebaker, a once proud company.

One ugly car in my opinion. Leave it in the barn. Nice write up, though.

Lovely looking car. 1962 Studebaker. Although not my favourite year for the car, my favourite is the 1959-61 Studebaker, I hope it goes to a good owner to enjoy and take care of it.

The early Lark type “Cruisers” were longer wheelbase cars than the standard 4-doors The extra rear leg room made them comfortable, and many were used as taxis

“Interior refreshment “ is the height of understatement, don’t you think?
If it was a house, it would be a Gut Job.

You ain’t kiddin’! I thought, okay the outside needs a little work and different wheels and tires, and then that interior shot!!! Maybe if they just removed that bright yellow cover in the front and cleaned out the trash. No favors.
