Seller’s Loss, Your Gain: 1972 Plymouth Satellite

Chrysler redesigned its B-body intermediates in 1971, using fuselage-type styling. And the hardtops and sedans got different sheet metal, making them distinctive in the showrooms and on the road. The cars were little changed in 1972 and the seller bought this one three years ago as a project that would be completed as a gift for his daughter. Lots of work has been done, but the family dynamic has changed, and the car must be sold at a loss. The photos provided likely don’t tell the story as well as the restoration binder that the seller will include. Located in Clifton, New Jersey, this unfinished Mopar is available here on Barn Finds Classifieds for $10,000.

In deciphering the VIN provided by the seller, it’s possible this Satellite was the high-end Sebring Plus at one time. When it left the factory in Windsor, Ontario, it had a 318 cubic inch V8. The automobile has no engine now and the seller doesn’t say if it had one when he acquired it. But we’re guessing from the level of investment made thus far that a more potent powerplant was on the drawing board. A 727 TorqueFlite transmission is part of the package.

We’re told this was a complete car before the project started with all original parts (sans the motor). But it’s on wheels now with the body primed and etched, so a repaint wouldn’t be too far behind. The photos don’t show a sequence of events in the restoration process and we’re not sure which photo would best be representative now. Including storage fees, we told that more than $100,000 has been poured into this project, which can be had now for 10 cents on the dollar.

How do you invest $100,000 into a car that’s worth maximum $15 K to $25 k and this is all you have to show for it. Seriously?

I can see that if he paid $1000 per month for storage. Seems to be reasonable in Jersey LOL

I never understand why someone will drop so much in a car that could be bought original untouched nice for 1/3 of price.

So i guess the lesson here is unless one can work on old cars or have knowledge of the process stay clear of restorations.

I would love to read the full detailed billing on this car to date.

    1. Charge customer 20 thousand to sand paint off body

    2. Go to Vegas and cut loose

    3. Primer car for 15000

    4. Tell owner will have to fabricate floor pans for 30000

    5. Head back to Vegas again

    6. Charge 32000 to obtain original NOS paint to apply to car

    7. Back to Vegas

$1000 to buy it. $7750 in restoration work. 2 1/2 years storage at $100/day. 72 Roadrunners are barely worth anything, let alone a 318 satellite. Good luck.

The reason for selling is interesting to say the least. It appears that the seller’s youngest daughter ended their relationship, but the seller goes on to say that the daughter is the mother of his (or her) children. That’s a crazy family dynamic for sure. I’m not sure if it would be interesting to meet these people, or maybe better to run away from them.

There are a couple states where this stuff has been known to happen (I can’t name them without starting verbal warfare that isn’t permitted on here) but until now I didn’t think New Jersey was one of them.

The seller should be on the Jerry Springer TV show if he (or she) hasn’t been on there already.

I call BS on the $100k unless there’s a briefcase with $80k sitting in the trunk.

Seller said he was building it as a gift to his daughter (the mother of his children). I’m not sure I want to be part of this circle…..

This has got to be the weirdest seller description ever, and one of the least believable.

I think some of you are reading the ad wrong. It was going to be a gift for his daughter until the mother of his children ended the relationship. His “baby mama” apparently cut him off from his daughter.

I see your point. You can read what the seller says two ways. One is an explanation, the other one is really creepy. I say we give the seller a pass on this one and assume the best.

The seller deserves a push on this one, he/she says there’s $100K spent on a car that’s completely apart, without a motor, and worth $25K finished. Finished is a LONG was off. I’ve been there and done that. 20 years ago it hurt a lot, now it hurts just looking at my 65 Belvedere and remembering what it took to do it.
