Sitting 47 Years: Pair of 1965 Pontiac GTOs

If you got into your time machine and went back to 1964, you could witness the introduction of both the Ford Mustang and Pontiac GTO. The latter is credited with starting the mid-size muscle car movement that dominated the rest of the decade. It was a surprising and immediate sales success, paving the way for others to follow. The seller has a pair of 1965 GTOs that have been sitting since 1979-80 and are both rollers. Located in a yard in Creston, Ohio, this forlorn duo is available here on craigslist for $4,000 as a package deal. Our thanks to Rocco B. for the tip!

Sales jumped from 32,400 units in 1964 to 75,300 in 1965, with the main difference being a switch to stacked headlights in the second outing. 74% of production was 2-door hardtops (like one of the cars here), and 15% was convertibles (like the other one). 389 cubic inch V8s were standard with Tri-Power optional (no mention is made if either of these cars ever had it). One engine and one transmission have survived (though probably not functional).

These cars may once have been painted black or dark blue, but the finishes have given up to the weather. And both machines have rust inside and out (even in the frames), and some of the components are missing, though at least one interior looks pretty good for the age. The convertible had a fair number of options back in the day, while the hardtop was fairly bare bones.

We’re told both relics have titles and roll and steer, so they can be loaded on trailers. Neither car may have moved in 47 years, so you’ll have to decide whether you want to try to make one good car out of two or use the pair for parts for another project. The asking price covers both vehicles, and cash is king.

If you combined these 2 cars, you might end up with 1/2 a car.

Good grief, both cars are practically dissolved. You’ve got a smattering of parts here most of which condition is unknown, but best of all, you get eight headlights! Throw in a couple more derelicts like these plus a rusted Mopar, and you’ve got a deal!

We are about to see what the value of two titles and miscellaneous parts and scrap value is. In today’s world it is probably not an unreasonable asking price
