SportsRoof Project: 1969 Ford Mustang 302 V8

Ford’s Mustang got its second facelift in 1969, and it was a little more pronounced than the 1967-68 rework. The car would gain quad headlights for the only time during the first generation’s long run (through 1973). Fastbacks would become the biggest seller at 45% of production, including the new Mach 1 and Boss models. This ’69 SportsRoof (as the fastback was now referred to) is a project awaiting restoration with no mention of its running status. From West Chester, Pennsylvania, this largely original pony is available here on eBay, where the reserve is unmet at $7,100.

Despite a flood of new competitors in 1967-68, Ford’s Mustang continued to hold the top sales spot in the pony car scene. Just under 300,000 copies rolled down the assembly line, only off the pace by six percent, but the Chevy Camaro was closing fast. The seller’s car was one of 56,000 “standard” fastbacks built in ’69, and this one was pretty routine – a 302 cubic inch 2-barrel V8 paired with an automatic transmission. It may have 76,000 original miles.

The seller’s Ford wears old Raven Black paint, although we see some blue peeking out from under the grille. We’re told it has a dark red interior, but does red turn into tan when it fades, as that’s what it looks like now? And the headliner is all but falling down. So, a fair amount of cosmetic work is in the buyer’s future.

We don’t know the background of this Ford’s 56-year lifecycle. The seller instead uses marketing speak over details (“piece of American muscle car history” and “this stunning original turns heads wherever it goes”). The car’s looks are helped by a set of classic Cragar wheels wearing raised white letter Goodrich tires. So is this SportsRoof in your future?

    The seller is correct with the accolades. It’s a blank slate ready for a number matching 302 make over? There’s a selling and buying feature. Sure this will cost a lot to bring to a standard, but it’s a 69 fastback

    Not very good pictures of rust prone pictures, which show previous repairs and will so again. Rust on both inner fenders fore and aft of the shock towers.

    The seller calls it a beauty, that’s subjective. Hopefully the reserve isn’t too high.

    I concur its in the eye of the beholder. I can see it has the trunk right rusted thru, quarters rusted, doors (passenger) and fender passenger showing a plate or just rusted and expanded.. then as stated above shock towers …

    I will have a high confidence level it needs pans and torque boxes too.
    Then debatable on the inner rockers and outer rockers and not showing any trunk shots so add this to it.
    The engine could be stock but does it turn over? Hopefully the block was drained of water to avoid cracking… (folks used to put water their radiators back in the 1960’s.). Then add the interior package, carpet, gas tank wiring, paint and tires etc. etc.
    Add this up and new medal from CJ pony parts…

    I have built worse rustangs but it’s a time eater more than the metal purchase if one can weld. I restored a 1967 vert and the doors, hood and one fender along with the hump and shock towers were original.

    The numbers can climb quickly here…
