Stored 40 Years! 1968 Plymouth Barracuda Fastback

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The sporty Plymouth Barracuda had the misfortune of hitting the market 17 days before the Ford Mustang in 1964. The latter vehicle coined the term “pony car” to define the new market segment, and it buried the Barracuda in terms of sales. The seller offers a second-generation Cuda from 1968 that’s been in storage for more than 40 years. It runs but needs more work and can be found in Coal Township, Pennsylvania, and is available here on craigslist for $12,000. Our appreciation goes to Jack M. for another cool tip!

While the 1968 Mustang had a down year due to newer competition (317,000 units), the Plymouth Barracuda only found 45,000 buyers, putting it near the bottom of the sales race. About half of those built were fastbacks like the seller’s long-dormant Mopar. This was not built as a ‘Cuda, so it left the factory with a 318 cubic-inch V8 and a TorqueFlite automatic. The owner apparently wanted more pizzazz, so a 340 and a 4-speed manual are calling this Barracuda home. The car’s odometer reads 61,000 miles, so being worn out shouldn’t have been an issue.

When the car was pulled out of hibernation, the seller added gas to an empty tank, and the Plymouth fired right up, and the 340 held good oil pressure. The water pump leaks, and the carburetor needs a rebuild (the parts will be supplied for the latter). The seller replaced the master cylinder, but only half of the brakes work, which will require investigation. So maybe a couple of weekends’ worth of effort will set everything right.

After receiving a wash, the white paint seems to be okay with what the seller believes is limited and repairable rust. Inside, the bucket seats will need to be reupholstered, while everything else may be of daily driver quality. With one of Chrysler’s better small blocks (sporting headers), this Barracuda could offer a lot of potential to the right buyer.

asa hiskol kid we hada odd duck (not sure how many yrs older, deff not 14 – 17) that hung around after school. All ways gave kids rides home from the soda shop (’66 era?) in his ’64. Dressed like the boys who’d ride home with him.

The 3 yr second gen came out he snapped 1 up, and he changed (w/the rest of the world then?). Now the shinny patterned shirt, open @ the chest, gold chain/medallion showing. No more jeans, the polyester pants. He didnt fool the 1/2 doz guys I hung with. We never took the ride. Mystery unsolved, but alot happier. I liked both models for what they were~

With a 340 and 4spd installed if the body isn’t horrible rusted you’d have expected it to sell quickly with a $12,000 asking price.
