Take Your Pick: Garage Stash of Imports

In a dusty garage in Dallas, Texas, there are at least four imported autos for sale. They all look to have been sitting there for some time and no mention is made if any of them run. Perhaps they were collected by someone who has since passed on and the job of selling them is left to a relative or third party. These vehicles are described as “great project cars” and the only reference to price is $1,300 OBO for a SLC 450 Mercedes. Check them out here on craigslist.

The current or prior owner of these cars no doubt had an affinity for imported luxury cars. Two of them are Mercedes 450 SLC models (German), one from 1976 and the other from 1980. The only thing that seems to differentiate the pair is that one is maroon and the other gold. They were in production from 1973 to 1980 and offered as a 2-door coupe using a 4.5-liter V8 engine. Versions of the car sold in the U.S. could only be had with an automatic transmission.

The other two autos hail from Great Britain, both XJ8 Jaguar sedans both produced in 2001. As you would expect, these were well-equipped vehicles with leather upholstery and A/C being standard equipment. But the Jags could be temperamental machines; my next door owned one of these from this era and it was in the shop as much as it was on the road. But if they’re your cup of tea, the XJ8 sedans were quite attractive.

Man not 76 450 would be a nice car to put back together. Great deal too. Would like to see a little bit more of it. Going to have to try and contact them in the morning giving that it’s just after midnight right now. See what happens.

I had a ‘77 280 SLC. Gray market version. Great car, but everyone wanted the convertible model. Had to give it away to charity. Dual overhead cam six, was lively.

Actually, the XJ8’s was pretty decent when maintained and the owner knew the repairs or DIY parts were going to be more expensive. They are wonderful to drive and a real bargain if in decent shape.
