Time Warp: 1965 Ford F-250 Camper Combination

The first travel trailer was built about five minutes after the Model T was introduced. It didn’t take long for adventurers to hitch a platform to a Model T, throw a tent on it, and trundle off to the woods. Modifying the T by removing sheet metal, forming a box, and packing it with a bed and a kitchen made the car into a camper. In 1910, both Packard and Pierce Arrow built what we think of as motorhomes. With travel trailering gaining traction around the country, the first group devoted to the pursuit started in 1919 – the Tin Can Tourists. Named after the Model T – “Tin Lizzie” – the club gained over 100,000 members by 1924. Eventually, automakers started offering camping accessories with their cars. Fast forward a few decades and Ford’s Camper Special made it even easier to attach your choice of a camper to wheels. Here on craigslist is a 1965 Ford F-250 Camper Special, already equipped with a matching camper. The asking price is $29,800 and the pair is located in Renton, Washington. Thanks to Kevin for this time warp of a tip!

We’re told very little about the condition, history, or configuration of this pair. The 1965 Ford F-250 Camper Special was usually equipped with a 352 cid V8 with about 200 hp, a heavy-duty alternator, extra provisions for engine and transmission cooling, and wiring for the camper. This truck has a four-speed manual. The odometer reads 5674, and it has rolled over. The seller indicates that this rig was kept in dry storage when it was not being used, all its life. The interior is serviceable with what appears to be original upholstery. The gauges, switches, steering wheel, door handles, and mats are all present.

The camper’s interior is in original condition, with some tears in the dinette upholstery and an unkempt aura (especially in the bathroom). The bed is above the roof of the truck. No word on how the electricity, tanks, or plumbing are working.

The kitchen has a three-burner stove and a double sink. A small refrigerator is tucked in a cabinet across from the sink. The basics are all here, though it’s hard to know from the listing how much work the buyer will face. This truck and camper pair carries a premium price, but if everything is in perfect working order, maybe it’s justified. What do you think of this pair?

It probably is dripping from a roof leak.

“unkempt aura” – methinks this is an apt description of more than the head. Really like your write-ups.

Looks like a good project and a good looking truck to start with I believe in a little hard work and making it your own had one it was fun to take a trip in and a 352 engine are great ones the camper may need work but it would be worth it in the long run for road trips and self contained with new stainless steel holding tanks it would last a lifetime for someone
You have to look a head not like you don’t want it. Me love a great looking truck and camper. You have to look ahead and make a difference in history to own part of this trucks past and what you want it for.

I was on a trip in a rural area and saw two of these vintage rigs (one looked like a 74) so still in the wild today,

During covid one could sell ANY camper. Now when everyone is back to reality and has to work again not so popular. A look on FB you can buy about anything you want.

My brother lent me his once. Bed above cab is like being in a coffin. Top heavy on the curves was a nightmare. No thanks.

No shower, no A/C in either the truck or camper? No word on the plumbing, or fridge. 100K on the engine is a lot without a rebuild in its future. No thanks, not even for 1/2 the asking price. But perhaps there is a nostalgia community that would like it enough.

Odometer hasn’t turned over, the mileage shown is not 5,674, it’s 55,673. The general overall condition suggests a vehicle with 55,000 miles.

There are very few people looking for a vintage tuck and camper combo to actually use for it’s intended purpose. Especially one with only a half-bath, no A/C in either the cab or the camper, and manual transmission. This would be a nice set to exhibit at car shows, but one has to have a tall inside storage location, as it won’t do well in most outside storage situations. For these reasons, I think this is overpriced, and a more realistic value would be about 50% less.

Yes you are right about the odo reading 55,673 – I missed a digit there – but the ad says it HAS rolled over.

Geez buddy–thanks for taking the time to “clean it up” for the oix. This thing is GROSSLY overpriced; if I can buy a ’92 E250 with more amenities than this thing for under $7K, this guy needs to put down the pipe for a while and get back to reality

Picture this, Colorado coming down the million dollar highway, loaded down, hell hook a trailer with a small boat on the back, throw in some morning dew and have at it with those brakes and that tranny. Adventures to be had….lol
