Triple Black Beauty: 1973 Plymouth Fury Gran Coupe

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the Fury nameplate dominated the Plymouth full-size lineup. And they played musical chairs with the sub-names. Such was the Fury Gran Coupe, which replaced the Fury Sport, and later it would become the Gran Fury. The seller has a nice, low-mileage 1973 Gran Coupe with low miles. While it looks great at 20 feet, some cosmetic issues will eventually need attention. Located in Westlake, Ohio, this likely survivor is available here on eBay, where the seller’s reserve is beyond the current bid of $2,425.

The 1973 model year was the last for the “fuselage” body design that dated to 1969. While a 318 cubic inch V8 was standard, this car came with the optional 360 engine with a 2-barrel carburetor. The intake manifold was changed out before the seller bought the car in 2019, and it now has a 4-barrel with dual exhaust. Given the level of luxury here, this Mopar may have the optional Brougham package. More than 18,000 Fury Gran Coupes were assembled in ’73 (while gasoline was still a quarter a gallon?).

This Plymouth was sharp when new: black paint, black vinyl roof covering, and black leather interior. The odometer has yet to pass the 36,000-mile mark, which would be incredible if true after 53 years. Since the seller has performed a number of services on the car over time, we assume it sat unused for a period. Besides the upgraded 360, it also comes with a factory 904 automatic transmission, and both do their jobs well. A list of some of the newer stuff includes the shock absorbers, tires and aftermarket wheels, u-joints, brakes, and some interior work.

The undercarriage is said to be spotless, and most of the sheet metal is fine except for a few places where corrosion is trying to take hold. The black paint shines well, but there are blemishes there that may be okay if Cars & Coffee is on your occasional schedule. All in all, this seems like a decent ride, and if you’re looking for big and bold, this Mopar may fit the bill.

Wow good looking Fury. But is it really solid? Could I push my finger through some of that rush holes. Or, rust marks. And will it go through? The 360 is a good engine had one. 360-2 bbl and it still moved out. So the 4 bbl would make it move quicker. I like the front seat looks like a lazy boy!😂 I don’t want to fall asleep! 🤦‍♂️ Now the mileage is hard to believe. I feel a one should be in front of the 3. I don’t know what a complete paint job goes for today. But if I brought this that what I would do. You don’t see many of these at shows or cruises. It’s worth it to get it done. So good luck to the next owner. 🇺🇸🐻

I was quoted between ten and thirteen thousand for a complete paint job. Ouch. I’m tempted to DIY my car but when I mentioned to a Body shop owner I got laughed at. Challenge accepted.

I learned to drive (part of the year) in my dad’s `73 Gran Sedan. You’ve heard me mention the horrid ‘baby poop’ comment my Mom made on it’s butterscotch color. A huge car to navigate traffic in, but I got used to it fairly quick. Thankfully, Dad traded it on a `75 Fury Coupe ‘Road Runner’ I showed him! (FINALLY, I didn’t have to have dad drop me off at school a block away any more!! LOL)

Decent Plymouth here I would want to have a further inspection to check the rust . Still a pretty straight car with a lot of work done to it.

My Dad had a 74 Gran Coupe with 400. Butterscotch. Smooth ride. Was tight and handled well for its size.

I had one of these back in the mid 70’s, except that it was a 4 door. Great car and this one is so tempting! I wish I had the room for it!
