Twin Turbo 440! 1966 Plymouth Fury

Don’t let this Plymouth’s nerdy Clark Kent face fool you; this plain white suit covers some serious super-muscle. The 1966 Plymouth Fury in Mesa, Arizona seeks a new owner here on Craigslist, a buyer with the vision, expertise, and budget to get this collection of forced-induction parts strapped to a 440 cid V8 ready to roll. Jamming either a 440 or twin turbos under the flat hood of an otherwise boring two-door Fury would satisfy most gear-heads, but popping the hood to reveal both takes things to an entirely different level. The $6000 asking price might exceed the sum of parts, assuming everything works. Thanks to reader T.J. for spotting this furious boosted Fury.

A layer of dust suggests progress on this project car ceased some time ago, begging the question “why did progress stop?” The seller describes the setup as two new turbos, twin fuel pumps, fuel cell, an aluminum radiator, and an intercooler. That leaves fuel and air a bit short of the combustion chambers, with piping and induction work (at least) remaining to be done, not to mention chassis strengthening and possibly making room for fatter rubber.

Nothing visible suggests dreams of carving up corners on a twisty two-lane or road course, but making this Plymouth safe to blast down a drag strip seems like a realistic vision for the low-budget build.

A crumpled quarter panel spells “totaled” for most cars these days, but it somehow suits the brutal as is theme of this potent Plymouth. The interior must be a disaster as it didn’t even make the listing pictures, but who cares? This feels like a project based on proximity, like when a garage somehow ends up sheltering an old coupe, a 440, and a couple of turbos. The next thing you know, it’s a project car! I doubt that one dollar spent on cosmetic updates would pay back, but, again, who cares? Nothing dusty or dull will subtract from the evil grin you’ll get from smashing the skinny Pedal of Anger. Hold on tight as the boost comes on while time and space blur like the jump to light speed. How would you finish this dusty twin-turbo sleeper?

WoW. It reminds me of what a young future founder of Nelson Racing Engines might’ve done.

This will be a lot of fun if the next owner can pull it all together. Don’t bother painting it, because you’ll never be able to keep paint on the hood over those big turbos.

Oh, please,,,boy howdy, I come from a different camp. Mid 60’s Chrysler products were just the best. To try and combine what appears to be a “more money than brains” deal, doesn’t make a lick of sense,, it’s certainly not to my liking, but then, I saw’r nothing wrong with a “Slanty” in these cars. I know I’m in the minority, but drop a 318 in and,,,,perhaps, and today this is rare, but put the rest of the money into a car one could actually use, doofus. I mean, this isn’t even finished, and off to a bad start. These were such a nice design, and at the risk of being blunt, I hope the seller loses their shirt for ruining such a nice car like the ’66 Fury,,,

I agree, crazy. I had a ’66 Sport Fury with a 318 and it was a fine car. Wish I still had it.

Woof. Serious power with those twin turbos! That said, with the higher compression of this 440 and the boost of twin turbos I wouldn’t be surprised if the project stalled because the hg blew…or worse!

First car was a 65 sport fury with 383 until I threw a rod street racing and picked up a 440 at a junk yard out of a 69 police interceptor ex state police car that was totaled with 25,000 miles. Much better than the 383 and plenty fast I cannot imagine putting twin turbid on it
We put air shocks on the back and cranked up the torsion bars in front with 60’s on back and 78’s on front to make it look like a gasser LOL. Stupid but it ran like stink

I had a ‘65 Fury 383 four door and it too threw a rod. Fun car until that happened. I think it was scrapped after that.
