Work-In-Progress: 1960 Chevrolet Kingswood

On two occasions, Chevrolet branded their big station wagons separately from the rest of the product lines. That happened in 1959-60 and again in 1969-72. The Kingswood was the equivalent of the Impala but only came as a 9-seat commuter. This 1960 edition has had its body removed from the chassis and rust work corrected, then set back in place. There is no engine or transmission. Located in Mesa, Arizona, this vehicular piece of unfinished business is available here on craigslist for $7,500.

During the “batwing” era of the full-size Chevies, there were four models. The biggest seller was the entry-level Brookwood (Biscayne), then the mid-level Parkwood (Bel Air), followed by the Kingswood and Nomad (Impala, one with seating for nine, the other six). In 1960, nearly 16,800 Kingswoods were produced, suggesting there was a small market for three bench seats.

Though it looks like a barn find, we’re told this wagon is not. A lot of heavy lifting has already been done to get it ready for the buyer to pick up and finish it his or her own way. The body and frame were separated, and patchwork was done. The chassis rolls, but the body has not been fully reattached. The seller (or someone else) has installed airbags, new A-frame arms, front disc brakes, and a dual master cylinder.

We’re told the engine compartment is ready for a small-block Chevrolet V8 and a 700R4 transmission. But that’s not the only way you could go, and it will add a lot of cost to the project. Other than the third seat, we don’t know what the rest of the interior looks like. More photos would help paint a better picture of how much work is still at stake. Kudos to Tony Primo for the tip.
