1 of 501: 1971 Plymouth ‘Cuda Project

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This may be a rare 1971 Plymouth Barracuda though it’s in a mess today. That was a down year for the car in terms of production numbers and just 500 or so ‘Cudas were produced with a 383 cubic inch V8 and a 4-speed manual transmission. To get this car resurrected, the seller is throwing in a parts car and pieces from a Dodge Challenger that may be helpful. So, you have to carry it all away from Kaysville, Utah, and the once-powerful Mopar is available here on eBay where the no reserve bidding holds at $5,200.

If you wanted a really hot last-generation Barracuda, the 1971 model was the way to go. It also was the only year that dual headlights were used. With rising insurance rates suppressing demand for muscle cars, the 383, 440, and Hemi engines would all be retired from Chrysler’s pony cars at the end of the season. Beginning in 1972, the fastest engine in the Barracuda mix was the 340 small block that would soon find itself detuned a bit – all in the name of lower exhaust emissions. From nearly 49,000 Barracudas built in 1970, only 16,500 crossed the line the next year when the seller’s car was built.

As the story goes, the seller’s father-in-law bought this car in 2007 after it had been wrecked (check out the front and rear clips). It had a 383 with a 6-Pack when he bought it though the VIN indicates a 4-barrel was in the car when it left the factory. It was drivable at the time, but the engine wasn’t particularly civil, even with Posi-Traction. Before he passed away, he began working on the body and accumulating parts for a restoration of some sort. Because it had been wrecked, a salvage title came with the car then and now.

The low production numbers for this car may be even lower if its color, Hemi Orange, is the original hue. The 6-pack part of the engine is long gone and the 4-speed that has survived will not go with the deal. The interior had been replaced in 2007, so what’s there should be reusable since it and the rest of Plymouth have lived mostly indoors. If you buy the package deal, be sure to have enough trailer capacity to haul it all away.

Rare in name only if the original drivetrain and supporting tags are MIA. Parts from and for 3 junk cars=a lot of money, sweat, money, patience and money to build one decent car.
Truly a shame it never got finished.

I can’t read paint color codes on Mopars. Was this an original orange car that was re-painted blue at some time, and then re-painted orange over that, or is it a blue car that has been painted orange? Anyone know?

That information is not provided in the ebay listing. It’s not disclosed in the VIN.

Looking at that tag in the third picture makes you wonder what’s under that orange paint.

Its pretty obvious this car was originally blue , given the scarcity and desirability of these cars , I’m sure someone will restore it- hopefully in blue..I’m a stickler for original colors !

Could a dedicated amateur even contemplate completion of this project? I doubt that paying retail for the work would pencil out to reasonable. But, I own two Jaguars, so my brain is not working at even a fundamental level.

Sure, I’m just a hobbyist, but I’ve replaced floors, trunk floors/extensions, rocker panels, inner/outer wheelhouses, and quarters. Also done repairs on front and rear window channels and a-pillars on vinyl top cars. All it takes is patience, persistence, a few thousand dollars’ worth of equipment and tools, and an understanding wife.

I can hardly believe that I am writing this, but if the seller would include the 4 speed, the current bid isn’t out of line. More work than I would take on, but when I wore a younger man’s clothes it would not have spooked me.

You actually trust EBay? Amazon is not to far behind that fraudulent rabbit hole. Time to break these companies up and get some competition. That will improve on things like this. I would be more likely buy from a website that takes honesty seriously then one that does not. Plus you would find prices dropping. Do a little research on the unfair practices that artificially bump up prices and unfairly stifle competition and start ups on those two sites alone. I encourage people to buy locally first, and if need be use the net, but anywhere else but them. I understand sometimes you have no choice, but do your best to not let them rule everything if possible.

Ebay calculates feedback percentage using only the past year. One needs to look at all the feedback for a better understanding of sellers character.

Get rid of E-Bay???? They only use data from the last year? Why do we need the data from 5 or 10 years ago? If you are an old car person and you do not know anything about the last few years of car trends, you need to quit and join a sewing group. One year old is plenty of info. Break up E-Bay? Why? Yes, let’s get rid of the site which allows us to find and buy old cars and old car parts. Here’s a solution for the anti-E-Bay people. Take it off of your computer and do not use it. Problem solved. to 454Rat: My car club and I do need and use seller data beyond a year, probably not 10. I don’t know their cut off, if any. Some sellers take a break because of bad feedback and some sellers are suspended for some periods of time. We’re regular EB buyers for 20 years and get some good deals, but I have lost too, over-all I think I’m ahead. I realize they can only discipline after the fact. In recent years they have gotten better with helping buyers with problems, but perfection is a tough goal, especially in the rare case where buyer is trying to cheat the seller. If one is buying a socket for a rachet handle, one doesn’t have to worry about a seller who isn’t good at packaging, but if buying glassware, check for that. I weigh the risks versus the money saving. I don’t want EB to go away, they want people to look at feedback beyond a year, to assess risk, etc. My car club and I do need and use seller data beyond a year, probably not 10. Thanks, I better understand, now. I cannot see breaking up E-Bay to create competition as someone else said. Anything you buy here or anywhere is Caveat Emptor. Good luck with your business.

E- Bay is a sword that cute both ways. I live in a small coastal town and very little is available here or anyplace that isn’t at least a three hour drive away. The local merchants that are left aren’t interested in looking up or special ordering anything. I know amazon and the like are the reason why but this is the world I live in. I use e-bay to buy things like parts to fix my appliances. I get the part number, check around at various sources and check e-bay. I almost always find exactly what I want for the best price on ebay. I only buy new oem parts. You do have to be careful not to buy the cheap knock-offs. So far, so good.

“The 6-pack part of the engine is long gone and the 4-speed that has survived will not go with the deal.”……..No, the seller says the 4 speed will not be sold separately……re-read the ad……Not a bad deal if you’re up for the work

When the seller says that the engine, trans, and rear end will not be sold separately, I think he means that he will not sell the ones that come with the car separately. Those three pieces are where most of the value is in this “deal”.
