1-of-86: 1991 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Convertible

Rarity claims are not new in the classic world, with some standing up to scrutiny better than others. The seller claims that this 1991 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Convertible is 1-of-86 built during that model year. It is in excellent condition as an unmolested survivor needing nothing but a new home. I must say a big thank you to Barn Finder PRA4SNW for spotting that Camaro listed here at Hemmings in Milford, Connecticut. It could be yours for $24,000, with the listing statistics suggesting that plenty of people like what they see.

Chevrolet’s Third Generation Camaro range was reaching the end of its production life by the time this Z28 Convertible rolled off the line in 1991. Its replacement was waiting in the wings, scheduled to hit the market for the 1993 model year. Therefore, any changes performed were strictly evolutionary, with the company unwilling to spend a fortune reinventing the wheel. The first owner ordered our feature Convertible in Arctic White, and its overall presentation is ideal for anyone seeking a high-end driver. A close inspection will probably reveal minor paint chips, but there are no glaring problems that might cause embarrassment if the buyer rocks up to a Cars & Coffee behind the wheel of this survivor. There are no panel problems, and no rust issues to spoil the ownership experience. The seller recently replaced the soft-top which, naturally, fits as tight as a drum. The glass is clear, and the 16″ alloy wheels are spotless.

Powering this Camaro is a 5.0-liter V8 and, as the Tuned-Port Injection version, it delivers 205hp and 285 ft/lbs of torque to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission. It is unsurprising that the car also features power assistance for the steering and four-wheel disc brakes. Chevrolet had definitely rediscovered its performance mojo by 1991, with more advanced engine technology and the weight reduction program that formed part of the Third Generation Camaro’s development reaping benefits over the ¼-mile. Potential buyers can consider our feature car as a turnkey proposition. It features a new clutch and relatively new tires. The seller quotes an odometer reading of 39,000 genuine miles and, since the car comes with a selection of documentation, this might be verifiable.

The Camaro’s interior is a sea of Red, with the upholstered surfaces sporting cloth and vinyl in that shade. Its condition is particularly noteworthy and seems consistent with the claimed odometer reading. The outer seat edges have avoided the typical wear issues, the carpet is spotless, and there is no evidence of abuse, UV damage, or aftermarket additions. It isn’t lavishly appointed by modern standards, although the buyer will welcome the driver’s airbag, air conditioning, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, tilt wheel, and the AM/FM radio/cassette player.

Chevrolet produced 3,203 examples of the Camaro Z28 Convertible in 1991, with 480 buyers ordering their new toy with a five-speed manual transmission. However, only 86 of those were finished in Arctic White. Therefore, I do believe that this car deserves to be classed as rare, because the features that earn it that label are pretty significant, rather than obscure. The seller’s price looks competitive, particularly if the odometer reading is verifiable. Are those thoughts enough for you to join the thirty-one people who have placed this Z28 on their Watch List? Or, are you tempted to take things a step further by parking this classic in your garage?

Inside and out (especially outside), just peak styling for this generation of Camaro.

The manual trans came with a slightly more robust engine and a better axle ratio, making for a much sportier drive than similar cars with an automatic.

Love this one. Nothing beats a white over red drop top. The TPI 5.0 will give reliable and good if not great performance with the manual tranny while still being good with fuel. Just the air bag steering looks dorky but then again in the late 80’s early 90’s they where all like that. hope it finds a nice home

The undercarriage pics in the Hemmings ad are not from a 3rd gen.
