Here’s something we haven’t seen too often at Barn Finds: a one-ton 1986 Toyota pickup with dual rear wheels and a custom cab extension. I’m guessing it was originally made to pull a trailer, but we don’t know for sure. The seller has this unusual Toyota truck posted here on craigslist just south of Grants Pass, Oregon, and they’re asking $10,500 or best offer. We’ve seen three or four one-ton Toyota dually pickups here on Barn Finds, and they seemed to be set up for pulling a trailer, sometimes matched with the paint and graphics scheme of the truck. Sunrader is a big name, or it was. There is hardly a more shop-class-looking truck configuration than this, but I love it. I’d want to repaint the wheels; black doesn’t seem to work too well.
Perfect for towing a light fifth-wheel trailer, and seemingly set up for that with that mesh tailgate. I’m assuming that these two strips are for holding the tongue for a fifth-wheel? Those rear fender flares are wicked huge, and how about the plush, padded headroom in the rear seating area? The fourth-generation Toyota Hilux was known simply as the pickup in this era in North America, but we never got the crew cab and certainly nothing like this truck from the factory. Although they did offer a cab-chassis with dual rear wheels.
Grants Pass, Oregon is a drier climate than parts of the state and region further north and west, but I’m still surprised to see a couple of big dash cracks. Other than that, the dirty carpet, and not seeing a 5-speed manual, it looks pretty nice inside. This one has air conditioning, and it’s said to work as it should. The back seating area is unusual, having been added by an aftermarket customization company, but with some work it would look nice inside this l’il rig.
The bottom of the hood has seen better days, but the engine is a Toyota 22R-E, which is a 2.4-liter fuel-injected SOHC inline-four with 105 horsepower and 136 lb-ft of torque when new. Backed by an automatic transmission sending power to the rear wheels, the seller says this truck goes down the road “nice and smooth,” and it has a new gas tank, fuel pump, fuel injectors, spark plugs, and plug wires. Would any of you have a need (or a want) for an unusual one-ton dually custom two-door “crew cab” pickup like this Toyota?
Seen a few camper models equipped just like this up here in BC. Autoloader and 4cyl on the big hills ⛰️ 🏔 must’ve been something. Make sure the 4ways ⚠️ are working well. 💁♂️
There is something I really like about this. A scaled down dually Toyota from the 80’s. I really wish this was a stick. I’d personally make the wheels an Argent silver. It looks like its survived all this time in fairly solid condition. Although the surface rust under the hood is a bit of a head scratcher for me. Or is that old insulation? Can’t tell looking on my phone. I do remember seeing these back then once in a while. In fact, I forgot all about these until Scotty wrote this up. Hope it goes to a good new home.
