1979 Lincoln Continental Town Car With 7,200 Original Miles

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1979 Lincoln Continental Town Car has led a sheltered life. It spends its days squirreled away in a warm garage, only emerging for the occasional weekend outing. Therefore, the fact that it has only accumulated a genuine 7,200 miles on its odometer is unsurprising. It is an unmolested survivor, presenting superbly, and needing nothing but a new home. I must say a big thank you to Barn Finder Curvette for spotting the Lincoln listed here on eBay in Arlington Heights, Illinois. The seller set their price for this spotless classic at $19,700 OBO.

Lincoln’s Fifth Generation Continental range enjoyed the longest production run of any series since the badge appeared in 1940. The first cars graced showroom floors for the 1970 model year, with the last cars leaving the line in 1979. This final-year example is a Town Car, ordered by its first owner in subtle Code 9D White. The seller indicates that the original owner was an elderly doctor who used the car sparingly. Therefore, its overall condition is consistent with the claimed odometer reading. The paint is excellent, the matching Landau-style vinyl top is unstained and unmarked, and there is no evidence of panel damage or rust. The trim looks exceptional for its age, the glass is clear, and this classic retains its original wheels and covers, wrapped in narrow whitewalls.

Lincoln was feeling the pinch by 1979, with the 400ci V8 hiding under this Town Car’s hood delivering a relatively modest 159hp and 315 ft/lbs of torque. The saving grace is this motor’s low-end torque delivery, which is welcome in a car tipping the scales north of 4,800 lbs. The rest of the mechanical components are typical Lincoln fare, including a three-speed automatic transmission and power-assisted steering and brakes. The seller doesn’t mention verifying evidence for the mileage claim, but the spotless engine bay presentation supports it. It has a known history and is a turnkey proposition that runs and drives well.

The seller uses the term “time capsule” to describe this Town Car. That expression may cause some to clench their teeth, but it seems apt in this case. The interior is a sea of rich Red, with acres of woodgrain providing a contrast. Its presentation is all you might expect given the car’s history. There is no wear, deterioration, or evidence of abuse or neglect. It may stretch credibility to describe it as perfect, but it doesn’t miss the mark by much if it isn’t. It is also loaded with features that buyers came to expect from a premium purchase during this era. The new owner receives air conditioning, power windows, power locks, a power trunk release, cruise control, a tilt wheel, remote exterior mirrors, a Cartier clock, a rear defogger, and an AM/FM radio with an 8-track player and a power antenna. The seller states that everything works as it should, and there are no visible aftermarket additions.

An in-person inspection would be needed to confirm it, but the seller’s images suggest this 1979 Lincoln Continental Town Car presents well enough to take its place on a showroom floor. It would be interesting to determine whether the odometer reading is documented, though the ownership history suggests it may be via Service Records. If that is the case, the seller’s BIN figure is justified. The listing statistics indicate that people like what they see. Do you share that feeling? If so, could you be tempted to give this Lincoln a new home?

I believe the mileage claim; this car is gorgeous. Still has the square body, the trim strip following the tops of the fenders and the door line, love the hidden headlamps. Opera windows and the partial vinyl roof add to the charm. We’ll never see these style markers again, so it’s great to gaze on a car like this.

Huge trunk. Plenty of room for Fredo Corleone and all his fishing tackle. At under 20k this is a bargain if barges are your thing. It’s about 2 hours from me. Fortunately the French bordello interior is a deal breaker for me.

Front bumper has taken a hit, otherwise, very nice. But this era Lincoln doesn’t do it for me.

Be still my Lincoln Lovin Heart! Other than the 400 engine, THIS BOLD and BEAUTIFUL Town Car fits my Too much is NEVER enough tastes to the proverbial T. Years ago, I had a 78 Town Coupe and unfortunately let it get away. You’ve heard this before, but It’s HUGE! It guzzles gas! It pollutes the air! It scares the birds! Other cars part like the Red Sea to get out of its way! What’s NOT to love ? And I DO! Price is more than fair. Santa Baby, drive this beauty to my garage!
