Signature Series Survivor: 1992 Lincoln Continental

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Having traveled just over 47,000 miles over the last 34 years, this 1992 Lincoln Continental Signature Series has reportedly been lovingly maintained by the seller’s family, and they have done a lot of maintenance on it in the last two years. This low-mile survivor can be found here on craigslist in the San Gabriel area of Los Angeles, California, and they’re asking $7,500. Here is the original listing, and thanks to Rocco B. for the tip!

I don’t think this car is set up for rock crawling in Moab, but it sure looks like it could be. The seller lists “Coil springs and struts suspension conversion” as one of the maintenance and/or upgrades performed on this car over the last two years. It’s a bit high for me, but maybe there’s a way to dial it down a notch without too much fiddling?

The first front-wheel drive Continental, and the first one after the bustle-back, faux-spare-tire-bump cars, the eighth-generation cars were made from 1987 for the 1988 model year until 1994 in a four-door sedan body style only. Some clown came up with a two-door coupe, however, at least a Photoshop version. It looks disturbingly like a two-door Ford Tempo, and this car is no Tempo; this is a top luxury car of its era, and it appears to be a very nice one.

Leather seats were standard, but buyers could opt for fabric seating surfaces if they wanted them instead. Could you even imagine anyone going with fabric seats today if leather were the same price? I can not, but I prefer fabric seats, so I’m weird. How did we all survive without having leather seats a few decades ago? As expected, the back seat looks like new, and the trunk does as well.

The engine is a 3.8-liter fuel-injected OHV V6 with 160 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque when new. Backed by a four-speed automatic, power is sent to the front wheels and please read the listing to see all of the work that’s been done to keep this car maintained recently; it’s quite a list. Have any of you owned a Continental from this generation with front-wheel drive?

I had a 90′ in the same colour with the V6 and a 97′ in the same colour with the 32 valve hotrod V8.Both were the best riding cars i ever owned but it was night and day between “adequate” V6 of the 90′ and “tire burning fun” of the 97′ :D Still either way those Conty’s were truely sweet cars.

That “coupe” has the largest rear glass 🪟 ever seen on a 2 door automobile lol. 👍

Converted to the wrong coil springs. That front end has looks like it’s had a 3″ lift.

I can imagine someone going with cloth seats today. Me. I would LOVE to be able to buy a luxury car today with cloth seats. Instead I’m relegated to economy cars with the lowest trim level.

My grandfather had a similar one when I was a kid but his was gray with black leather seats. I liked the look of these but my grandfather traded it for the 1st generation Lexus LS400 and had lexus LS sedans till he died.

I had a 94. It was a great car but I must admit, while comfortable, the interior didn’t feel as special as I would have liked. Had an Olds 98 before and the interior looked nicer but the Continental rode better.

The 3.8 had a ton of head gasket issues as there was uneven cooling. The back bank of cylinders would get hotter than the front and with an aluminum head and a cast iron black you got warping.

The most elegant Taurus you’re going to find. The two door would be better with the more formal Cougar roofline.

The bad thing is you can’t find computer for ABS or suspension ride…..

That 3.8 is the other bad thing…

Be wary of these. My sister bought one after she fell in love with my 94 Town Car. It was fine for about 5k miles then everything started going haywire. Modules and computer problems sidelined the car for months on end. Last I heard it was out of commission again at only 65k miles. While my TC has it’s own gremlins, parts are still obtainable because so many were built!
