Have you ever wanted to take up four parking spaces at your local shopping center? Well, if you buy this 1977 Chrysler New Yorker from Monroe Township, New Jersey, you can do just that, as our feature photo shows. This beast is closing in on a half century old and looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor. It can be yours for a mere $11,500 according to the original ad here on Craigslist. Tip of the cap to Rocco B. for sending this one in.

Fuel consumption was a real hot button issue in the 1970s, but you’d never know it by the size and engine displacement of some of the vehicles that came out of that decade. This land yacht illustrates the point perfectly, and wow does it look good fifty-ish years later. The seller states it had one repaint in its original color (which would have been Formal Black when it left the factory) and that “metallic flakes were added” and it “shines like a diamond out in the sun.” Now that’s some poetry, as are the hideaway headlights and waterfall grille. Behind them sits a 400 cu. in. V8 engine, the smaller option available in the ‘77 New Yorker, and that should be fed by a 4 bbl carburetor and mated to a TorqueFlite automatic transmission. Sadly, we do not get an engine pic, but you’d have to imagine that at 35,000 original miles it probably looks as good as the rest of the car.

Thankfully, the interior is just as staggering as the exterior. The dash, pad, and steering wheel look virtually untouched–by hand or by sun. And those seats look comfortable enough to sleep on, which could actually be possible in a car this big. Also, is that the “rich, Corinthian leather” that Ricardo Montalban used to purr about back then? With power seats, locks, and windows, not to mention cruise control and a/c, this New Yorker showcases the height of 1970s luxury.

Chrysler built more than 62,000 New Yorkers for the 1977 model year, and even fully optioned they priced out at about $9,000 max. Finding one that’s this original and in this shape with an asking price still in the ballpark 50 years later seems almost as absurd as those back wheel half-cover things. With an overall length of 231 in., you’ll need a lot of garage. Do you have room in your life for this New Yorker?

Cool car, looks to be in great shape. These American (super) full-sizers from the 70’s are, in hindsight, really something.

Aside: a current Ram 1500 Crew Cab Short Bed is essentially the same length (it is 2″ longer). That tidbit might illustrate this car’s sheer length, and/or it might illustrate how large a “normal” vehicle of today is.

    Thank you chrisr.

Very nice land barge here. Price is good too. Three land barges in the past couple of days here and they are all priced right for the average working person and very clean.

“Back wheel half cover things”?? That’s the first time I’ve heard fender skirts described that way. I would love to own this one. Talk about cruisin’ in style!!!

At that price, seller is only asking for the price of his paint job back, the car is free.

What a luxurious boat. The only question is to you have to become a pimp after purchase?
