37k Genuine Miles: 1974 AMC Javelin

While this 1974 Javelin is a nice looking car, it is a bit of an unknown quantity. The seller provides no information about what engine is fitted to the car, so we have to work with what we have. You will find the Javelin listed for sale here on Craigslist. It is located in Traverse City, Michigan, and is being offered for sale with a clean title. The price for this Javelin has been set at $14,200.

The Javelin is an attractive car, and black paint seems to suit the car really well. The car appears to be in good condition, with no obvious signs of rust or corrosion. The exterior trim also looks good, and while there are no photos provided, the seller does say that the frame is also good.

The interior appears to be in really good condition. It has been fitted with an aftermarket stereo and steering wheel, but otherwise, everything looks to be in great condition. The only thing that I can see is the fact that the carpet may be a little faded between the seats, and the seller needs to invest in a vacuum cleaner because the dirt on the carpet is really distracting in an interior this good.

The rear seat on the Javelin looks equally as good as the front. It really does appear that the car has been cared for. As far as mechanical components are concerned, all that we know is that the Javelin is fitted with its original engine and automatic transmission and that it runs well. The seller also states that the car has only traveled 37,000 miles. As usual, I would hope that the owner has some documentation to confirm this claim. I wish that I could tell you more, but you now know as much as I do.

I have always liked the Javelin, and this one looks like a nice one. We are hamstrung a bit by the information provided in the ad. My big hope is that the seller reads this, because if he can provide us with some information, then he will be doing his cause a whole lot of good.

Really nice Javelin, AMC built some nice vehicles. I agree with the vacuum statement, I always do a good detail before selling any vehicle. This shouldn’t last long, good luck to the new owner.

I love the 74 Javelin; the proportions are perfect, and AMC always did some offbeat things in the interiors that really kept them interesting.

Now my steering wheel beef: why does every yo-yo feel compelled to replace an original steering wheel (that was designed very thoughtfully by a trained automotive designer) with some hundred-dollar aftermarket wheel from the auto parts store? And don’t get me started on Panasports…

Well it does have tilt wheel which is a big plus for me. No mention of motor size or pictures of the engine bay is a minus for me.

If it weren’t for the tilt steering column and undamaged driver’s seat, I would suggest that the owner might have been on the large side and struggled to fit behind the wheel. I can sympathize. I don’t need an airplane seat belt extender, but the armrest is up and my knees are firmly jammed into the seat in front of me. If my ’68 Mustang were a daily driver, it would have an aftermarket wheel or tilt column, because I have to squeeze my legs under the wheel every time I get in.

One of the owners of this car may have driven a mopar with the smaller THICKER mopar Tuff Wheel, or a ’70-6 t/a with its smaller thicker steering wheel. & did not want to go back to the test tube thin larger diameter stock wheel.
& aftermarket steerin wheels are lot less money than oems, tho i would go aftermarket with a wheel that had 3 spokes at 9pm, 6pm & 3pm instead – lots to choose from 14″, 14.5″,15″ , etc.

Very nice! It has the look of a base-model Javelin with column-shift automatic and no fender badges. Might well be a six-cylinder. Original steering wheel was probably the same one used in the Gremlin, nothing to write home about. Being a Michigan car a prospective buyer will want to take a careful look underneath!

From the rear you see 2 tailpipe
      So maybe what a 304?

      It has dual exhausts.

The upholstery looks like the cheap fabric everybody in Mexico uses for their cars.

I am so tired of seeing that in cars.

Looks to have dual exhaust, small V8 would be my uneducated guess. Nice looking shape to these, as far as the steering wheel goes, a racy looking aftermarket wheel has always been a common mod, or that wrap that everyone one here loves to see.
Compared to a lot of other cars from ’74 the Javelin retains it’s imposing good looks.

Good catch, I didn’t notice the duals. Maybe a 304 V8. Or maybe the “401” fender badges were removed. :) Of course over the last 44 years almost anything could have been dropped in under the hood!

AMC didn’t put fender badges on the 73-74 Javelins regardless of size.

It looks a lot like a car I recently saw on Hemmings.

I think I like the Hemmings car better than this one.
These really look sharp in glossy black.

something is amiss with that column mounted shifter. I thought all javelins had a floor shifter.

Nope, I had 2 71’s with column shifters. Both SST’s, one 360, one 6 cyl.

There was a really clean and original 6 cylinder column shift SST on Hemmings for awhile that was reasonably priced. Even without the console shift, it was an attractive car inside and out.

Did he give you the first couple digits of the vin? That would confirm that it was originally a 304 car.

This car looks fast just standing still, looking at the beautiful side view!!
The front overhang on this is huge, like the ’69 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II &
Ford Torino Talladaga. I wonder if it’s like that for aerodynamic reasons!!
What amazes me the most is that this is a ’74 car & like the ’74 challenger & ’74 cuda, they all have the same or similar attractive chrome bumpers that look like ’71 bumpers, with the exception that they may stick out a little farther for ’74 & have those 4 black bumper guards (2 missing from the front of the above car).
Why in the world did chevy ruin the looks of the ’74 camaro front & back, when all they had to do was do the same front & back (as AMC did) to THEIR ’71 chrome bumpers for ’74? & the camaro could have looked like a ’71 through ’81 !! (with the great 4 circular tailights too) !!!, tho the RS front would no doubt have to go. & just use the ’71 standard full length slim front chrome bumper. I don’t get it.
& how much LESS weight do these AMC ’74 bumpers add to their cars, compared to the ’74 GM bumpers, & Ford’s, like those ridiculous 1’s on the ’74 maverick?

I am fairly certain that this was the same car that sat for most of the late summer for sale in Onaway MI for $7,900. We drove past it a number of times and my wife refused to let me stop and check it out.
