Convertibles were still popular in the mid-1960s, and Ford offered them in all their major series. The Galaxie 500 was Ford’s equivalent of the Chevrolet Impala, and they built more than 24,000 drop-tops in 1967, with only 20% being the sportier 500XL edition. The seller’s apparent survivor is from the larger population and has a 390-cubic-inch big-block V8. It’s a driver that needs some cosmetic attention. The big Fords got a redesign in 1965, and all of the future models in that generation (except 1968) had stacked headlights. The styling refresh of 1967 was perhaps the most attractive of the bunch (IMO), and a lot of folks agreed as Ford sold more than 425,000 Galaxies that year, still falling short of the Impala, which remained in first place.
This Galaxie drop-top could be wearing Pebble Beige paint, which was akin to silver. It could be original, but no such reference is made, and we’re told the car needs some bodywork. The interior is black and does look factory, with the carpeting and dash pad being standouts for attention. The big Ford has traveled 103,000 miles, a respectable number for a 59-year-old family car.
Under the hood resides a 390 V8 (original?) teamed with a Cruise-O-Matic automatic tranny (also original?). The brakes and exhaust have been replaced, so that adds up to at least a driver. Besides the body, the convertible top has a few slits, so you’d better plan on replacing it when you do the interior work. When restored, this big Ford should be both cool and fast (you won’t pass too many gas stations on your way to Cars & Coffee).
