Black Over Black: 1969 Pontiac Firebird

There’s nothing more striking than a well-kept, vintage car that wears black over black. That describes the seller’s 1969 Pontiac Firebird which looks mighty sweet from any angle. Has it been restored at 69,000 miles? We don’t know, but it’s a “pony car” proud to be seen in. Located in Columbia, South Carolina, the seller has relisted the automobile here on eBay due to a non-paying previous auction winner. The current bid is $24,405.

The Firebird was in its third year in 1969 and got a styling refresh much like its GM companion, the Chevy Camaro. Unlike the Camaro, sales declined by 20% over the year before (wonder why) even though both cars had a 15-month production run due to a delay with the all-new 1970s. More than 11,500 copies of the Firebird came equipped with a 400 cubic inch V8 like the seller’s car, while I find it a bit surprising this one has a 2-speed rather than a 3-speed automatic transmission.

Within the seller’s listing for the Firebird, it’s indicated to be a convertible, but that’s not the case. It has twin hood scoops, power steering and brakes, and 15-inch Rally II wheels. The latter really set the car off with the black insets that match almost everything else. Mechanically, the only noted improvement is the switch to an aluminum radiator and a new dual exhaust system, which was likely how the car came from the factory.

Is this a real-deal Firebird 400? Perhaps so. The VIN only decodes as having a V8 and there were multiple choices. There is no build sheet or cowl tag unless the seller overlooked them. If this auto hasn’t been restored, then someone has treated it like a baby for the past 54 years. Who’s ready to rumble?

I always wondered why the firebird was not quicker with the GTO 400 ? Lighter car with same power should be faster

There was a tab on the carb that smushed some of the power..by bending the tab back, your Firebird 400 was faster than a GTO and could suck the paint off it’s not as good Camaro brother :P

Never understood why these didn’t sell like the Camaro. I’d sure be drawn to this at car show over a Camaro. A buddy had a ’69 with a 421 six pack. The shoe lace carb linkages were troublesome.

I’d much rather have a ’70 goat than a Firechicken for the same year. Not to mention higher collector car value

Nice Camaro but I’d lose that steering wheel for a factory correct one.

This is one of my favorites. I adore both the 69 Firebird and the 67 GTO. This Black on black screams some AC/DC for sure! Can’t help but remember my youth looking at this.

400’s with automatics only came with 3 speed THM400 trans.
400’s also came with chrome air cleaner lid and valve covers.
No Pontiacs came with “400-4” decal on air cleaner.
I’d check it out by driving or pics of trans pan or PHS documents before buying

I once had a 69 Firebird 400 with 400thm and a/c. It was bright yellow with black vinyl top and black interior. I bought it off a used car lot for $2200.00 in the summer of 1972. It had American racing wheels on it and really looked good. I raced it quite a few times at the local drag strip and highways in the area. Loved that car.

    God Bless America

Hi, I saw red flags as well. had a real 400 68′ in 75′. I couldn’t tell about the trans but, your correct, th400 3spd was the only auto in 400. it does have the inserts as a 400 should, Yaaa…right about engine chrome too. non a/c car but, correct center a/c vent. never liked the rear spoiler…it just hides the lid where the 400 goes..can’t tell if it’s the lid emblem? real 400 radiator w/trans cooler never never overheated! my 400 had fac. a/c as well. you’ll have to put it on
lift .check sway bars/ coils/leaf springs.

They totally ruined a beautiful car by changing the front to that ugly plastic thing and sales numbers reflect it.My favorite car i ever owned was my 68 Firebird 4 spd, 400!
