Carport Find: Cheap 1984 Ford Ranger

Until 1983, Ford relied on imports from Japan to compete in the compact truck market in the U.S. That changed with the American-built Ranger in 1983, a small transport that would be produced through 2012. The seller has a running Ranger from 1984 whose problems are stopping and its appearance. Located under a steel carport in Winchester, Kentucky, this Ford is offered as part of an estate sale for $850 here on Facebook Marketplace. Our thanks go to “Pnuts” for the tip.

The Ranger competed against the Chevrolet S-10 and the later Colorado in the compact pickup space. Demand for smaller trucks began to wane, so both the Ranger and Colorado were mothballed after 2012. The Colorado would return as a mid-size truck in 2016, while the reinvented Ranger pursued the same market beginning in 2019. Both trucks are still in production today, but larger than the seller’s edition.

Engines in the 1980s Ranger included an inline-4 as standard with a V6 as optional. The seller’s truck has the former, paired with an automatic transmission. Apparently, the truck belonged to the seller’s mother, who took sick, taking the pickup off the road for three years. It’s drivable, but the left rear brake is frozen, so that will likely be the first mechanical item for you to address.

The appearance of the truck is fair at best, and the two photos provided from the side view almost look like different vehicles. One of the stipulations the seller has is that the title must be transferred into the buyer’s name before the pickup leaves the property, something that may hinder buyers because he/she won’t be able to take physical possession right away. But for the low asking price here, what’s the hurry?
