End Of An Era: 1979 Lincoln Continental Town Coupe

America produced numerous personal luxury cars over the years that earned the nickname “land yacht”, but if one was ever worthy of being called a terrain battleship, it might be the 1979 Lincoln Continental Town Coupe like this one here on eBay.  However, the brand soon followed GM’s lead and made the sixth-generation model more than a foot shorter than before, using the Ford Panther platform and shedding nearly 800 pounds.  For those looking for a truly full-size luxurious cruiser, this one offers plenty of positives, including having traveled just 42,000 miles.  It’s located in Sarasota, Florida, and the no-reserve auction is currently at $6,100.

Nearly everything about this one screams seventies opulence, including the 233-inch length and aqua color everywhere.  It’s officially called Medium Turquoise Metallic, and it’s one of those hues that fits the persona of a 2-door Lincoln from this period beautifully.  The padded partial vinyl top matches, and the seller reports that this Town Coupe spent most of its life with an owner from California, who apparently always kept it in a garage.  Most of the paint is said to be original, and although there appears to be moderate fading on the top areas, the exterior still presents nicely overall.  Those tires have an ideal whitewall width for the era, and the set is described as brand new.

The same color theme continues inside, and its condition is stated as flawless.  Surprisingly, this one came with velour seats, and the window sticker shows a $212 credit noted as a “leather delete”.  However, it’s got just about every other bell and whistle imaginable, including cruise control, a tilt steering column, an illuminated outside thermometer, and an AM/FM/8-Track stereo system.  Based on the photos, the interior’s condition seems consistent with a vehicle of this age that’s been properly cared for and driven so little.

The seller neglected to provide a photo from under the hood, but only one engine was available here: a 400 V8, which only delivered 159 horsepower- not much for an automobile weighing over 4,600 pounds.  By this time, the 460 had been dropped, so if you want higher performance, it might make sense to wait for an earlier model.  However, if that’s not an issue, it may be hard to find a mostly original fifth-generation Lincoln Continental Town Coupe in better overall shape.  Another factor worth considering here is the underside, as all of the components we can see down below appear nearly perfect.  With everything inside and out in such strong condition, is the low power here a potential deal-breaker?
