I never cease to be amazed by the cars that are found living outdoors, and the condition that they are in. Some of the outdoor finds are as you would expect, rough, rusty, and ugly but there are a select few that age a little better in the elements like this ’47 Desoto Deluxe Coupe. Very complete and with no evidence of rot or really even any rust, this Desoto is certainly an interesting find. I believe that the car has been repainted at some point as I have seen that cream color on other Deluxes before. There is some missing trim, but despite that fact, the body appears quite straight and otherwise complete. Although this looks like a ready to drive weathered classic, this Desoto hasn’t run in a few years, but it sounds like the engine is not seized up. For the price and the charm, I would dare to say I would leave this car as is and make is a fun to drive classic cruiser. I would run some vintage steel wheels with some caps and call it done in the appearance department. Improve its drivability, find its missing trim and enjoy the open roads! Would you take a chance on this Affordable Desoto?
I’d love to have that car, it’s a dam crying shame that this owner has chosen to leave this car outside. I lack four things to own this car, time, money, space, and distance. Other than that I’d be a bidder. The desoto’ have always had impressive grilles and this car doesn’t disappoint, and the body lines are very stylish. I think it should be repainted back to the original cream colour with a red leather interior. Excellent find.
I’m only slightly better off than you, Mark. I have the money and distance isn’t a problem (one gets used to being distant from everything, living in the Antipodes), but time and some place to part it out of the weather would be an issue, as well as the lack of title for this particular vehicle.

They are nice cars, especially the club coupes. Unfortunately they always seem to take a backseat to so many others. And they deserve a lot more than they get. I know a guy who bought one that appeared restorable but when he got into the thick of the project he discovered that he was in for a lot more than was originally bargained for. He found that it had been in a good wreck some time before and it was actually over an inch shorter on the right side than the left. Undaunted, he worked at it (had to find another frame) and made it into a great car which he told me he had driven 45K miles since.
The front quarter view screams cool. The car absolutely demands that the driver wears a zoot suit and a fedora. Drive it as fast as it will go, drive it often, and listen to Dan Hicks on the sound system. Great find.
My Grandparents had a Desoto from around the same era, it had the same grill from what I remember though it was a 4 door. 2 things always fascinated me about the car. First was that one had suicide doors for the back seat. Second was Grandpa could put it into first gear but it didn’t move till he pressed the accelerator pedal. Grandpa took good care of it till he passed and Grandma didn’t drive so an Uncle got the car and it went downhill from there.
I think just because of those fond memories, I like this one.
Sounds like it had fluid drive. Once it’s in gear you just use the brakes to stop. It is a slow take off from a stop in third gear.
