Junkyard Bound: 1970 Plymouth Satellite

Disclosure: Barn Finds may receive compensation from clicks and purchases. Use caution when purchasing vehicles long distance. We recommend inspections before sending money.

When Plymouth finally brought back true full-size cars in 1965, the former B-bodies became intermediates. And the Satellite was launched as the high-end version in the Belvedere line-up. The B-bodies were redesigned in 1968-70 and it would be the period where sales flourished (in part due to the Road Runner and GTX muscle cars). The seller has a rusty 1970 2-door coupe that’s not complete and looks to have been languishing in the Florida climate for some time. Located in Naples, Florida, this project may be too far gone to restore, and the seller is fielding offers here on craigslist.

Out of 82,600 Satellites produced in 1970, 28,200 were 2-doors like this one. The seller’s car may be wearing what was once Lemon Twist paint, but it has badly deteriorated, and rust is plentiful in the rear quarter panels. There are no photos of the interior, so we don’t know if things in there look just as bad.

The seller does not disclose the mechanicals of this car, but a 318 cubic inch V8 with a Torqueflite automatic transmission would be likely. Assuming they still exist. We’re told that the seller is willing to part out this Mopar, but that would leave him or her a bigger mess than it is already. If no one comes forward with a decent offer, the next stop for this Plymouth could be the junkyard, by the seller’s own admission. Thanks for the tip, Steve B.

BUT, this IS a pillared hardtop, sedan, or coupe. That rear window alone is worth a goodly sum and I could never believe anyone would EVER send 4 magnum 500 wheels to the crusher. Something here is curiously astray in this listing and someone should really decode the fender tag to see what this car really is. The giant hole in hood under that sheet of metal is also a curiosity……

Give it away, part it out, but do not scrap rare parts

This being a sedan, wouldn’t that make it a Belvedere? I was under the impression that from 68-70 the Belvedere was either a 2 or four door sedan, and the Satellite was strictly a hardtop, while the Roadrunner could be had either way and the GTX was hardtop only. I realize convertibles were also offered on the Satellite, RR, and GTX trim levels but I am talking about fixed roof cars here. At any rate, yes too much good stuff here to scrap. Hopefully it was rescued!

I had a ’69 Plymouth Satellite previously and it was a 4 door sedan. It was an option.

Yes, the four door B-bodies were all sedans — there were no four door hardtops. That said, I do believe that Brando is correct. The Belvedere and Road Runner both came in a two door post coupe, but I don’t believe that the Satellite did.

Were there any interior photos it would be easy to confirm, but I believe that this is almost certainly an RL21 Belvedere coupe.

Whether it’s too far gone would depend on the undercarriage. If it’s not badly rusted and the suspension mounting points are all intact without significant rust around them then it could be saved. I’m tending to doubt that’s the case but we need more information to evaluate. Unfortunately , the seller doesn’t supply very many pictures.

Excellent idea, hairyolds. I was appalled that anyone would even consider junking a 1970s car now. Its lasted 57 years staying out of the junkyard. Why do it now? Many many usable parts and Graveyard Cars is the perfect place for it.

I need a trunk lid for my ‘70 GTX but this one definitely doesn’t look rust free to me. Also a hood but this is the wrong hood.
