Mild Restoration: 1972 International Scout II 345 V8

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Having undergone a “mild restoration”, according to the seller, this 1972 International Scout II looks fantastic in most of the photos. And speaking of photos, please check out the eBay listing here. The seller has uploaded 134 photos, unless I miscounted, and there’s also a video. And just like that, (almost) all is right with the world again. It’s located in Fontana, California, there is no reserve, and the current bid price is $17,689.

We’ve only seen five 1972 I-H Scout IIs here on Barn Finds over the years, and that isn’t a lot. International updated the Scout as the Scout II in early 1971, and it was their last consumer passenger vehicle, at least as far as what we think of as a passenger vehicle. They still make “smallish” trucks that a person can buy and drive, and some shipping companies use them, but I’m just trying to cover my bases here as someone will undoubtedly say, “Yeah, but what about the…”

In any case, this early Scout II is said to have been a California vehicle and appears solid, but the rockers are a bit wavy and seem coated in some photos. The seller has loaded well over 100 photos, and please check them out to see what I’m referring to, such as this one showing some waviness on the rockers, and yet the underside portions look great. Although they say the rockers are original and untouched, so I could be way off, and my apologies if I am.

The interior looks nice in the photos, and this one is positively Rodeo Drive-ready with what the seller says is a rebuilt Chrysler-sourced TorqueFlite automatic. The “Sage” interior and other interior features appear in nice condition, but the seats are covered, so we don’t get to see them in all but one photo, showing that they have seen better days, hence the covers. The dash top seems to be wearing a pad of some sort. The back seat is wearing a cover, unfortunately, but the rear cargo area looks good. A lot of surfaces have been coated in a bedliner-type material, including the inside surface of the tailgate.

This is the biggest engine offered for the Scout in 1972, a 345-cu.in. OHV V8 with 195 horsepower and 309 lb-ft of torque when new. Backed by the TorqueFlite three-speed automatic and transfer case sending power to all four wheels as needed, what are your thoughts about this Scout II and its “mild restoration?”

Very well done although the lift kit will have to go. Scouts were good trucks right from the getgo. I’m glad to see their popularity on the rise.

A friend of mine has a ‘73 that he ordered new. It’s interesting that he lives in a region that uses more salt on the roads that closer to my place. He’s been very careful with cleaning and general maintenance and there is no rust, contrary to popular belief…

Really nice Scout. I agree with Geomechs and Scotty, the stock height is plenty, I wouldn’t personally lift it. These were well built trucks. Huge Kudos to the seller too for going through the effort of taking the roof off and taking some photos of it both ways. Not a lot left that are this nice, especially if it still has its factory sheetmetal.

The rockers definitely look bruised in that photo; but that’s not unusual for a rig that’s seen some serious off-road use. Overall, a decent looking Scout.

I owned a 72 Scout with a single speed transfer case. To this day, it’s still one of the best vehicles I’ve ever owned. The timing isn’t right, but I still plan on owning another one before I die.

I to am not a fan of lift kits, but I am a fan of scouts and this would suit me fine. I’m impressed at the price increases of older trucks in recent years and I admit that I didn’t see them going this high.
