Only 2 Owners: 1977 Lincoln Continental Mark V

The Continental Mark V was produced by Lincoln between 1977 and 1979 and was the longest 2-door coupe ever marketed by the company. Its successor, the Mark VI, would be the latest of the U.S. auto industries cars to be downsized to more manageable portions. This nice ’77 Lincoln is a two-owner automobile that looks to have kept Father Time at bay at just 66,000 miles. It’s one of a couple of luxury automobiles being offered by the seller here on Barn Finds Classifieds. From Bourbonnais, Illinois, the asking price of $5,500 works out to just $287/foot.

Lincoln began its series of personal luxury cars in 1955-56 with the Mark II. That was largely a hand-built auto produced in small numbers and it didn’t make any money for Ford. When the Mark III entered the scene in 1969, all that changed as both assembly line volume and profits would grow. The Mark V is the fourth generation and would become the best-selling of the models at more than 228,000 copies in three years. The coupe was a big car at 230 inches, only to be eclipsed by the Continental 4-door sedans which were three inches greater in length. If you wanted to make a statement that you had “arrived” financially, these were the cars to do it in.

As the story goes, the original owner of this Mark V left it in storage in a dry warehouse for more than 20 years before the seller came along and found it. Not all that much was required to get it going again as a new gas tank, fuel pump, battery, and fresh petrol were what was required to get the big 460 cubic inch V8 to spring back to life. Today, it runs and drives but we suspect it will need a little more tinkering. For example, the drive belts can be squeaky at times from sitting and they have become dry. The tires also shared the disadvantages of old age and should be attended to before doing a lot of driving.

The car was treated to a repaint in the 1980s and it still looks good with no indication of rust being an issue. For a 46-year-old luxury vehicle, the interior looks quite nice, and nothing may be needed there to improve the driving experience other than a recharge of the factory air conditioning. You can tell the Lincoln was built during the CB radio craze of that era (breaker, breaker, good buddy) and it has a space-saver tire which looks rather small in that great big empty trunk. The buyer will not only take the car home but a load of original documentation. Here’s a video of the machine in action.

Wow, what a nice looking car, in my favorite color, low mileage and the 460! And reasonably priced! What’s not to love? I wish I could buy it!

I believe that is a bill Blass edition.

I live nearby. I’m gonna check it out.

Seems like a very low price.

Those seats are standard in the Mark. BB was two toned paint on the body.

Reasonable price for now. Soon after being driven for a while. Every seal hose and stitch will start to unravel.
Anything that sits a long time is a money pit. They wouldn’t be dumping it cheap if they were not aware.

First thing I thought was BB with those seats. The car I have always wanted and a very low price… but I think it said auction, so we shall see. I’d own it!

Nice car and nice price but it won’t fit in my garage. Darn. Sure would look ‘Fly’ cruising down the road in it.

The ’77 Bill Blass came only in midnight blue with a lurid orange “Chamois” landau roof and interior.

Not a BB edition – this is has the optional Blue/Dove Grey Luxury Group option. In the spring of 1977 (March), Lincoln released a few color-themed luxury group options that all included the two tone seats found on the Bill Blass editions. These were 77 1/2 model year only options introduced to drive up traffic to the showrooms. You’ll see the VIN tag lists a build date of 5/1977 and the window sticker lists the option as a $640 add on. Would love to hear your thoughts on how it looks in person. These blue/dove grey optioned 77 Marks are among my favorite

This is a beautiful car and one of the few Ford products I enjoyed driving. I taught school back in those days and I had a summer job driving newer vehicles to owners from outside the state. The “company” I drove for would pay me to drive the car to the owner, then fly me back via a local pilot in the area. It was a fun job for several summers. I drove a similar one from Dallas to Lake Tahoe, and it was a great drive.

Great looking car. We can go on about bumpers and smog restrictions and how much faster cars are today but will we look back and say anything today looks as good as this?

Had one nearly identical to it. Seemed to be
unlimited top end mph, tho I never pushed.
A superior quality ride was its trademark…
Someone will enjoy this entire package!

  9. Blake, does my opinion really matter ???

Looks like the Pucci designer series based on my old crumbly car broshures. Awesome car. I tacked a brosure of the centerfild of this next to the trans am centerfold over the dodge challenger (aka Mitsubishi galant) centerfolds in the car broshures back in the day. Yuppers, I was that weird kid on the block LOL. Luv this car.ps, my parents were fine with me wallpapering my room with free brochures

Seller says it’s an auction but it is listed as a classified. If the price is for real that’s great price for that car. They used to be pariahs on the used car market for guzzling gas…

Ya they guzzle gas but so what? If you can afford to own this car you can afford the gas. If the car can be bought for the $5k figure I see here then it a real steal unless there is something drastically wrong with the car that we don’t know about. I’ve owned two of the cars and they are the cat’s meowww. You should view this car in person if you intend to buy it.
