One of the fun automotive eras that blossomed in the late fifties was jet-age styling, or space-age styling, which included features such as futuristic trim and pronounced tail fins. While the 1959 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 may not have had the most dramatic shape in terms of ultramodern design, it undoubtedly succeeded with its fresh linear look and was a real eye-catcher for the time, with this one here on Craigslist seeming like a good contender to take to the next level. Priced at $8,000, it’s located in Aurora, Colorado, and we’d like to thank Barn Finds reader Mike F. for spotting this cool Olds and sending the tip our way!
This one appears to be pretty much complete on the outside, and although some photos show the rear bumper and windshield wipers removed, others show these components attached, so it’s probably safe to assume they are included. The body seems fairly straight overall, with some rust noted on the rockers and lower sections of the quarters. Hopefully, the rest of the exterior can be smoothed out successfully, without replacing any other sheet metal, followed by a respray that should make this Oldsmobile a real beauty once again.
If it’s just a fun driver you’re after, the interior may be good enough as is, since it appears to be in decent condition for the most part. One of the unique safety features of the ’59 Dynamic 88 was a color-changing speedometer, but the seller states that this car needs to be rewired, so it may not be functioning at the moment. However, the headlights, brake lights, and taillights are said to be working, so this one’s likely safe to operate before taking on the task of replacing the electrical lines.
The owner mentions that the original engine has been replaced with a 394 sourced from a 1963 Super 88, which received a thorough cleaning, new seals, and fresh paint before being installed. This 88 is reported to be running and driving well, with several new parts specified, including a gas tank, fuel lines, radiator, and hoses. There’s obviously quite a bit of work still to do to bring this one up to a top-notch example, but it seems to be at a reasonable starting point, and fortunately can be driven as you make progress. An excellent candidate for an amateur / semi professional body man to enter the classic car hobby. Some TLC and this car will make some one an enjoyable cruiser.. A drive it while you work on it project!! I hope the seller still has the original steel wheels and wheel covers?? Personally the aluminum spokes do not fit this car’s looks.
Of all the ’59 GM cars, Olds has my favorite Tailfin design. I agree with the above, great restoration candidate and would look terrific with the original rims and wheel covers and period correct Whitewalls.( notice I said period correct and not WIDE WHITEWALLS???) These colors are perfect for a 50’s cruiser too. Hope it goes to a good new home.
The two-door sedan (with post) is not a common body style for these. Many years ago, we had a neighbor who had a white one that he used for his daily driver (late 1960s). This is the only other one I’ve seen. You can find two-door hardtops and four-door flat-tops all day long, but not the 2-dr. sedan.
I agree with Pete.. This car is just unusual enough to be a great conversation starter at many events.
Lovely looking car. 1959 is my favourite year for the Oldsmobile. I only hope it runs and drives. I don’t mind patina as long as there are no holes in the floor and trunk area.
