Rare is one of those words that we all use a lot. Some sellers love that word when they say their vehicle is “1 of 14 with orange seat belts and a power trunk release!!” This 1987 AMC Eagle Sedan is 1 of 454 built in 1987, and it’s listed here on Facebook Marketplace in Ava, Missouri. We’ve only seen one 1987 AMC Eagle Sedan here on Barn Finds; the rest were wagons. That isn’t surprising, with sources saying that somewhere between 4,600 and 5,500 wagons were made in 1987. Only 454 Sedans are said to have been made in 1987, their last year, and AMC’s last year on the planet. The Eagle brand would survive the Chrysler buyout/takeover and come back in 1988 as the Eagle Wagon, but it was the only body style left, and 1988 would be its last year.
My favorite was the Eagle Kammback, the “Gremlin” redo, and there was also a sloping hatchback version, also with two doors. One of the rarest has to be the two-door Sedan; we’ve seen a couple of them here. I can’t tell if the Medium Blue body color changes in the rear 3/4 photo above? Is the right quarter panel lighter than the adjacent door color? Maybe it’s a shadow. We don’t get to see inside the trunk or underneath, but the seller provides a nice range of photos otherwise.
The blue and white checkered seat fabric looks great, both in 1980s style and condition, and everything else looks nice inside for the most part. The headliner looks like new, but I noticed some marks on the upper door opening. I can’t imagine that’s rust; maybe just some worn paint? The back seat looks like it’s right out of a brochure. Speaking of that, here’s a 1987 AMC Eagle brochure to check out.
The engine is AMC’s 258-cu.in. OHV inline-six with 110 horsepower and 210 lb-ft of torque. A 5-speed manual was the standard transmission, but this one has a Chrysler-sourced three-speed TorqueFlite automatic sending power to all four wheels as needed. The seller says this engine was recently rebuilt to factory specs and has either 200 miles or 300 miles on it (please read the description). This car sure looks great and has all-new tires, all-new brakes, including brake lines, a new gas tank, fuel pump, and lines. I’d sure like to see underside photos, but they say it was undercoated at the factory. Any thoughts on this ’87 Eagle Sedan for $12,500?

Sure looks nice. As we mark 50 years of 4wd cars here, I look out the showroom window and don’t see any 2wd vehicles on the lot.
I wonder if others have experienced what I have in respect to the quality of AMC automobiles in the 60’s? I purchased my ’64 Rambler American 440 in 1984 and drove it almost daily for many years and, since recently retired, I continue to drive the car once a week minimum just to keep it active. Other than an automatic transmission rebuild about 6 years ago, the car has received only routine maintenance and keeps on running as new. Lots of power (for a inline six cylinder), no oil consumption, close to 90,000 total miles.
I don’t see $12500. but there is a very nicely done EAGLE in my town with a Corvette LT1 in it that would be worth that.
A POS Eagle will still sell for $2500.
No way you could add $10K in work/restoration to a $2500 POS and have a car done to the quality and condition of the car presented for sale here!

For some reason, I feel these 4×4 types will become more collectable as years pass.
A nice car with 4 wheel drive and that inline-six being rebuilt many,many trouble free miles with 4 wheel drive as a big bonus. I should have bought one when they were cheap would love to own this one.
What is rare about it is what great condition it is in.
