360 V8 Upgrade: 1973 Plymouth Barracuda

This 1973 Plymouth Barracuda is one of those E-Bodies with plenty of strong points going for it already, but that’s certainly not to say it wouldn’t benefit from some additional love as well.  However, the positives appear to far outweigh the negatives overall, with a huge plus being that this one’s a capable driver, so it’s a fun Mopar that can be worked on at your own pace.  This 1973 base Barracuda is located in Pinconning, Michigan, and can be found here on eBay.  The opening bid of $15,000 has already been placed, but it’ll take more cash than that to make it yours, as this amount is still short of the reserve.

The paint is stated as original, sans hood, but it appears someone spent an afternoon with a cutting tool and a can of gray primer, with some of the corrosion in the quarters already snipped away.  The seller mentions that the body will require some patchwork, and hopefully, all of the panels are still solid enough not to require replacing.  The vinyl top is also stated as original, and unfortunately, some bubbling can be spotted under the material.  On the plus side, I agree with the owner’s assessment that the car’s not terrible for a 52-year-old example.

Mechanically, this Barracuda may be sound enough already, as the born-with 318 has been swapped in favor of a 360.  There’s not much information provided regarding the engine, such as its origin or what sort of work has been performed, but the owner does mention that it runs great.  A shot from underneath reveals that headers have been added, plus also confirms the claim that the platform area is solid.  This one’s also equipped with a 727 TorqueFlite automatic transmission, and I’m not detecting a drop of fluid leaking from anywhere down below.

Other than all of the gauges are functioning, few additional details are given regarding the interior, but we can see that it’s got the standard cluster plus a column shifter.  A couple of components that will require attention are the buckets and the dash cap, but for the most part, things don’t look all that bad inside.  The ’73 model isn’t quite as desirable as the earlier third-generation cars, and while it would be nice if this were a genuine ‘Cuda, I’m feeling this one’s at a very good starting point to restore, or even just drive as-is for a few miles.  What would you do with this 1973 Plymouth Barracuda?

Very similar to my first car – ’73 318 Barracuda with column automatic. This is not the worst one we have ever seen, by a long shot, but has had some metal work done already and some cleaning up. Still needs more help. Close to the condition mine was in by ’79, thanks to the salty MA winters.

Kudos to the seller for all of the undercarriage pics and short but honest description.
