B-Body Barn Find: 1968 Plymouth Satellite Convertible

It won’t take Mopar gearheads long to figure out that this 1968 Plymouth Satellite convertible has trim and nameplates that don’t technically belong there.  However, since it’s going to need a complete restoration anyway, the buyer can decide whether or not to make the add-ons disappear, should he or she choose to return this car to a stock Satellite instead of the Road Runner wannabe it’s become.  In fact, Plymouth didn’t even offer a convertible option on its RR in 1968, holding off until the car’s second year before making the droptop available on its budget-friendly muscle car.  Whatever you’ve got in mind, it’ll take time, effort, and a sackful of Benjamins to get there.  This one’s in Bloomington, Indiana, and hasn’t found a taker at the $7,500 asking price in the 3 weeks it’s been posted here on Facebook Marketplace.

Even with the Satellite’s popularity in the late sixties, convertible production didn’t account for many of its sales, since Plymouth made only a little over 4,000 B-Body ragtops in 1968.  Given its rarity, this one is probably worth fixing, but it also sat in a barn for decades, and the seller says it has some rust.  Those faux side scoops on the quarters are circa 1970, and a Road Runner badge has also been placed on each door, so the future owner will need to change all of this if they want to restore this Satellite to stay true to its roots.

The seller also reports that this Satellite was running and driving around 2000 when a relative acquired it, but the Plymouth was put into a barn about a year later because it needed a new top, new tires, and a carburetor adjustment.  After all that time sitting, the 440 reported to be under the hood will probably now require more than that to operate properly again, but it is confirmed to still turn over by hand.  It’s paired with a column-shifted automatic, but there’s no word on whether or not the transmission is still functional.

Plenty of work will also be needed to return the interior to even decent-driver condition, and unless the buyer is a huge Star Trek fan, that bumper sticker on the dash will have to go.  I’m a bit wary about the integrity of the floors and trunk, but fortunately, the rails underneath appear to remain fairly solid.  Other important decisions include whether to keep the quarter panel trim and Road Runner emblems intact during the restoration.  Is this 1968 Plymouth Satellite convertible worth the effort of repairing everything, or is returning it to the barn a better fate?
