Fresh 318 V8: 1966 Plymouth Fury III

When the Fury returned to full-size status in 1965, three trim versions were offered. Just like Chevrolet. Base trim was the Fury I (Biscayne), Fury II (Bel Air), and Fury III (Impala). The cars were little changed in 1966, including the seller’s Fury III 2-door hardtop. It has a freshly rebuilt 318 cubic inch V8 and lots of other new parts, installed or in the trunk. The Fury rode on the smaller B-body platform from 1962 to 1964 due to a competitive miscue on Chrysler’s part. When it returned to the bigger C-body in 1965, the public responded positively with triple the sales of the 1964 models. The Fury further copied Chevy by using a multiple combination of taillights based on the model; the Fury still outsold the Plymouth on a scale of 3 to 1).

You’ll need to read the seller’s listing at least twice to figure out what’s going on. The Plymouth has at least 124,000 miles, as the odometer has rolled over. The 318 V8 has been rebuilt, though we don’t know if it’s original to the Fury. Other new stuff includes the wiring, aluminum radiator with electric fan, master cylinder and power brake booster, disc brakes up front, and new wheels and rubber donuts. The list of new stuff goes on and on, and the trunk has $1,500 worth of spare goodies in it.

We’re told the interior is new (not original materials), but why did they put on that tiny little steering wheel? That would have to be the first thing to go. If my math is correct, the seller has spent $4,500 (the shop plus spares), so that amounts to nearly half of the asking price for you to take this Plymouth home. Yet later he/she says $16,000. The body may need work, as the seller is sending along a set of new rear quarter panels. So, there is work that remains to be performed. Are you on board with this project?
