Beginning in 1965, Chevrolet stepped into the luxury car arena with the Caprice, an Impala on cosmetic steroids. In various forms, the nameplate lasted more than 50 years, only recently disappearing from the automotive landscape. The seller has a 1989 Classic Brougham, which would have been top-of-the-line at the time, and we’re told it runs but needs TLC. Located in Surrey, British Columbia, the seller is asking just $1,000 here on craigslist – cheap wheels regardless of which currency it’s in. Curvette found this low buck tip for us.
The seller’s Caprice is from the third generation, which ran from 1977 to 1990. Styling was refreshed by the time the seller’s car was built, and the cars had upgraded headlights compared to the old sealed beams. The Caprice was the last GM car on the rear-wheel-drive B-platform except for the Pontiac Parisienne. Most were equipped with a 305 cubic-inch V8 engine, and fuel injection was new toward the end of that run. Its 170 hp was respectable for the era.
This car is offered with few photos, and we don’t know if the interior has any issues. The pics present a Chevy with a couple of dings, but the paint and all seem to be okay with no rust. We’re told the condition of the car is “fair,” but that’s about all the seller will say. It does have 140,000 kilometers, so the Caprice has seen its share of use.
I had to chuckle a little at the seller’s comment that goes, “posting again as I have figured out what these are worth now”. Really, $1,000 is all you think you can get for this vehicle, or were you asking even less and decided that was giving the Chevy away? At a minimum, this Chevrolet should at least work as a donor or parts car.
I will stick to my 1986 white Ford Escort hatchback with 4 speed and manual window cranks. No radio either!

I put almost 500,000km on one of these….Brakes, Tires & regular maintenance was all it cost me.
Then did the same thing with a 1994 & would have done it again in 1997….then they were gone.
Sometimes I wonder if the following conversations have taken place in the boardrooms of GM, Ford, Chrysler, and even the Japanese makes: “This model is so popular, we can’t make them fast enough to keep up with sales, we can name our price and people still buy them, let’s stop making it, and try something else that no one wants.”
GM did that with the Buick LeSabre, ca. 2004-2005. It had a great reputation, was top of the list in trouble-free operation, Buick’s best selling sedan at the time, everybody was familiar with them, so GM cancelled it and started making Lucernes and LaCrosses instead. No resale record, no maintenance or upkeep record, no reputation, and none of Buick’s traditional buyers knew what they were.
That’s right, you’re absolutely correct. The RWD Olds Cutlass Supreme sold so well from ’66 to ’77 that when they announced they were doing away with it after the ’77 model year they got so many orders that they had to continue building it for another several months to meet the demand. The ’78 is actually just a ’77 with a “Classic” badge added, and it was V8 only ~ no more 3.8 Buick V6, which was a shame. That was an awesome engine.

I’d put some twenty two inch wire wheels on it and some hydraulics. I’d see them like that in Virginia Beach all the time. BTW slang for over sized rims I found out, are Swangas.
Why not just stick some Conestoga wagon wheels (60″) on it?
140,000 kilometers is equal to only about 87,000 miles which is low mileage for this cruiser. It’s going to be a good car for someone!

Nice second car for the teenagers in the family to destroy! I’m glad that is all done for me 15 years ago. My kids had an F250 dually if they needed an extra vehicle which thay didn’t hurt at all.
87,000 miles @ $1000.00 seems like a bargain to me. If everything checks out , could be a great deal for some college kid.
I don’t believe they make college kids like they used to. You and I may have been happy to have this car but people are different today. The person this could work for is the one toughing it out today. Making ends meet is a challenge even for the established. I wouldn’t be to proud to drive this car.
